So, I got an idea of everyone's "walk-around" lens (mine is my 28-135).
Is there such a thing as a "walk-around" filter? I know people put filters on their lenses for this or that )polarizing, UV, etc...). If I want a filter on my lens for just general purpose, what would you suggest?
Thanks,
Kevin

I just use a UV filter, mostly to protect my lens. It prevents any UV haze and protects the actually lens from both dust and scratches. And its cheap.

You can buy UV filters or just plain clear glass protective filters. I just ordered a CPL for my 10-20mm lens which I plan to leave on it most of the time (since I ususally just use that lens outside, during the day).

No filter, unless I need one to protect the lens. Why use a $100 filter on a $1,000 lens?

I have never used any filters except for creative purposes, and none of my lenses have ever sustained any damage other than external wear due to years of handling them.
I do strongly suggest, though, that you get - and use - the lens hood(s)designed for your particular lens(es). They will do a lot for you. Not only will they block stray light than can easily degrade your images, but they will go a long way toward protecting the front end of your lenses against the day-to-day banging around that they sometimes get subjected to. A hood will keep your own fingers off the lens' front element as well.

Absolutely.
Last week, I encountered some students from the local college on a field shoot, and none were using their lens hoods. I suggested to one young lady (with a 5D and the 24/105) that she should use the lens hood all the time to protect against flare (she had been shooting at all angles on a bright sunny day). She looked at me as though I was senile (perhaps the gray hair fooled her).:)
I'm beginning to suspect that they think it's cool with no hood. I wonder what they teach there - except to shoot twenty frames a minute (on the single shot frame rate).
