I keep reading post from different sites and lots of people talk about hacking a digital camera. Since I am new to this whole digital camera thing I was hoping someone could tell me what a firmware hack is. Is that something that harms or helps your camera?

Thanks

Firmware is the programming in your camera as it comes from Canon. Occasionally, they will update the firmware, usually to to fix a bug. Usually it's just a matter of downloading the update and installing it in your camera

The 300D was released with several feature of the 10D disabled . Someone figured out how to modify the firmware to enable some (but not all) of the disabled features. In other words, they 'hacked' the firmware.

A firmware hack is a firmware "alteration" that is produced by entities other than the product manufacturer, and thus, is not authorized by the manufacturer.

Any adverse, unreversable results could void the products warranty.

The Hack for the 300D enables FEC and Custom Functions that enable you to customize how yor camera operates. It is not sanctioned by Canon so if your camera becomes disabled as a result of faulty installation of the Hack, Canon may charge you to make the repair.
