i think you will need a life size converter for that lens. i would get the 60 or the 100 macro. they are true 1 to 1. the one you listed is on 1 to 2.
hope that help.
Bill
this is the converter you'll need for the 50

you might have to look into Sigma macros if you really have to have 1:1 for under $300

300 Maybe a used 60mm canon macro.
Here is a link that may help you choose though you may have to save up a little more I would recommend the 100 2.8
And yes the Canon 50 is not a true macro and must have a life size converter to obtain 1:1. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=160960

I use tubes on a 50/1.2 or a 24-70/2.8 most times. Sometimes take a 180/3.5.

Haven't used a macro lens in forever, and never for wedding work. Someday I'll probably get some kenko tubes.

Sigma's 50 macro is perfectly suited for wedding detail shots. However, I've used a standard Canon 50mm with extension tubes at other celebrations and gotten great results.

i wanted to buy a 50 1.4 and the sigma 50 macro. but if you say i could get away with just the 50 and some tubes ill go for it. I just have never used tubes.

tubes are super easy to use. you just attach one (or more if you want really high magnification) between the lens & the body and then use the lens as normal, remembering to get really close to the subject and prolly manual focus will be easier (assuming you get EF tubes and not full manual, which suck with electronic lenses). my set cost less than $100 including shipping to NZ, and now i will never need another macro setup for the photography i do.

Yep they work great. I don't have any shots available with tubes + 50 f/1.4, but here's some I shot with the f/1.8 mkII and tubes:

Those were just in my crap light box that I made a couple years ago. I just realized that I don't have any from the 50th anniversary celebration I shot a couple years ago. They're on my other computer, on the other side of the planet. :( I use the Kenko Pro tubes by the way.

Another vote for the Kenko tubes. use then mostly with the 50 f/1.4 and 85 f/1.8, but they do get called upon with the 70-200 every now and then.

What type of magnification do you get with the 50 or the 85with a set of tubes? What is the working distance like? Thanks

I have a sigma 105mm 2.8 macro lens with a canon macro tube to go with it. I'll post some examples when I get a chance.
