It depends on your area of photographic interest:

Wildlife = Mark Trail
Baseball = Mark McGwire
Football = Mark Gastineau (a bit dated, perhaps?)
Auto Racing = Mark Donahue
I'm sure there are others... :lol:

In school we had a Mark,. he was very good with grammer,. we called him "Punctuation Mark"

Though he also had this problem of allways being stuck with his older brothers hand me down clothes,.. Remember toughskins? Anyway,. as is often the case,. his brothers old jeans did not allways fit quite right,. so some times he was called "High Water Mark"

When my mother used the name Mark, she was calling me. I like to believe Canon named their second generation cameras after me. That's probably why I'm crazy enough to be buying (leasing) a 1ds Mark II.

thus
Mark Two and Mark Twain are interchangeble.

I've never been to Twain. I have visited its Mexican sister cities, Cognito and Communicado.

All kidding aside, "Mark" refers to Markijuru Canon, son of Tatsuya "The Tattoo Man" Canon, founder of the company.

Markijuru had long whined to his father that Ford named an automotive division after his son, Edsel, but there were no Markijuru cameras being made at Canon. He often pouted, and complained that this was proof that Henry Ford loved his children more than Tatsuya loved him.

At one point, it looked like the New F-1 (an extraordinary 35mm SLR) would be marketed as the F-1 Markijuru, but at the last minute this plan was abandoned, when a marketing executive for Canon/Chevrolet's daughter company, Nova Motors, pointed out that in Spanish, "Markijuru" means "Doesn't Work." This was a particularly embarrassing fact, given that Markijuru himself had never worked a day in his life.

Ultimately, Markijuru died in 1993, of tetrodotoxin poisoning, the result of improperly prepared fugu at his 80th birthday party.

In memory of him, Markijuru was shortened to "Mark" (in order to avoid complications with the Spanish speaking market), and over the past several years a number of Canon SLRs have been slightly redesigned and had the "Mark" designation incorporated into their names.

The parallels between this story, and the ongoing efforts of Asterisk "Ass Man" Pentax (grandson of the founder of Asahi Pentax) are truly spooky.

Actually a lot of Twain scholars say that is not where he got the name from, but it was his habit of walking into the saloons of Virginia City with a friend and telling the bartender to "Mark twain", meaning "give us two and put it on my tab." Sounds too contrived to me, but I see that explanation given more often than the riverboat one.

The Ponderosa was near Lake Tahoe, west of Virginia City. Twain did spend some time around Tahoe (he accidentally burned a large part of the forest down, too), but I don't know if he ever visited the area they eventually filmed at. :lol:

Living this close to Las Vegas, we've been able to see a lot of their big shows. My absolute favorite is "Momma Mia."

Although I like my music with a little more 'edge' to it, ABBA's music works very well in this case.

(See? We're not all culturally backward out here in the desert.)

Going back to the mark twain thing,.

I did a good deal of reading on the Royal Navy of circa 1800's ... and when the sounding chains which were dangled to be sure of depth were manned,. the terms shouted out were "By the deep,. ## fathoms" and "By the Mark" ## fathoms,..

I'd not heard the story about Mark Twains name origin before,. but it does sounds plausible,. though it would be a rather shallow draft on a vessel that could navigate at "Mark Twain"

Funny...that's the only story I've ever heard.

Bear in mind that Mark Twain was only Samuel Clemens' pen name, and as a sattirist, it's not surprising he would have selected something a little whimsical.

In truth, though, river boats were flat-bottomed and had a very shallow draft.

Same here - it's the only story (prior to this thread) that I've ever heard. According to this site (http://www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/marktwain.htm) and similar information I've seen, "Mark Twain" meant two fathoms (12 feet) deep - meaning safe water for the riverboats.

CyberDyneSystems

Duh,.. of course, you see I'm stuck in my 1800's Royal Navy frame of mind,. a high seas man of war would be hard pressed to navigate in two fathoms... (not a chance)

A river boat on the other hand,. I'm sure would have no problem at all. As Belmondo said,. a shallow draft...

See, I learn something new every day! :)
