I have been quite happy with single RAW conversions done in Photomatix. I think the only drawback to creating HDR from multiple tif's from a single RAW is that it's very hard to keep out the HDR "look" to the finished image. You can't make them look entirely "normal". Which in my opinion is not a drawback. I can see normal anytime. ;)
