Paypal only.
I decided to put this up when I realized I pay over 6000 USD a year to keep this server up and running top speed ... all monetary help to aid this is totally voluntary and very much appreciated.
If there is more incoming than I need per month, I'll get CDS a spellchecker so that we finally would understand what he says :)
Other ways to support growth of POTN are:
- Use the forum! Be nice and help people.
- Link to POTN
- Spread the word!
- Submit POTN posts to Digg, del.icio.us or other reference sites.
- Refer to POTN in articles (Wiki, Magazines, News)
Thanks!

Go to PayPal here (https://www.paypal.com/) set up an account, and you're all set.
After you've created the PayPal account, all you have to do go to this page (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/donate.php) , click on the 'Make a Donation' button, and fill in the information. It's very easy.
PayPal takes a small percentage, but considering the convenience, it's a lot easier and safer than trying to send a check internationally.

I have now 1500GB monthly limit included and that is not going to be hit very soon. So that is not a problem. The server itself is very good and the point of moving to this server was that it has enough punch to keep up with the forum growth and peak times, also in future. And it has performed really well. Fact is that to get this kind of server speed you will need to pay some. FYI the server has
Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz (hyperthreaded)
1 GB RAM
2 120GB Hard Drives
Red Hat Enterprise
Then we have also:
Tipping Point network protection hardware
Fireslayer antidos protection hardware
remote backup server

Pekka,
I've made a donation to help and just wanted to thank you for all your great work (and that of the mods) and generosity in keeping this forum running. This is one of the best communities out there.
Suggestion for you to put this sticky on each forum. I kind of just stumbled across this by accident, and if there was better visibility, it would give more folks a chance to help. I believe that most would share my opinion and be glad to contribute.

Pekka,
Sent some green $ (or pink, blue, green, red, brown? for the Euro) your way. Please do post this as a sticky or a button on all the main pages. There is nothing wrong or bad in asking for help. This would be better than making the forums subscription only....like some sites have done. We all gathered here by accident and in due time have become friends, and I think that is the biggest benefit of this adhoc community you have set up for us. If there is any other way we can help, then please do let us know. One thought...some of the other forums get corporate sponsorship from companies like Adorama, B&H....since we are probably responsible for helping them out, I would think it would be natural for us to ask them for help. Some corporate sponsors that come to the top of my mind:
1. Canon, of course
2. B&H
3. Adorama
4. Lensmate (adapter for the A, G, and S series powershot cameras)
5. Optech
6. Hoya
7. Singh-Ray
What do you guys think?
Thanks,
mguna

suggestion:
There could be yearly subscription to this forum and members can have certain access to areas that are off limits to non-subscribers.
It might be better to a have a yearly subscription as the amount given and needed is always there and it helps us who are across the borders to understand how much is ok.
This forum teaches well....with good well mannered teachers. Keep it up.

(Note: If you will allow me to momentarily step aside from my role as moderator, the following is my personal opinion and is not based on any established policies of the forum)
I must respectfully disagree. I think it is wonderful that so many people have voluntarily donated money to help offset the operating cost of POTN. There is great value here, and most of us had previously indicated a desire to help in whatever way we could.
I am reluctant to see any program which creates privileges for any member based on any consideration other than participation. I think the only price of admission should be participation.
Also, I’m reluctant to see an annual subscription. This is not to say that people shouldn’t be encouraged to donate annually, but they should not be required to. There are at least two reasons in support of this:
1. Not everyone has the same capacity to pay, and that should never be become an impediment to anyone accessing such a valuable tool which historically has always been free.
2. As soon as Pekka starts charging for membership, the whole dynamic changes. Once he is seen as being a fee-based service provider, his responsibilities, and the expectations of a lot of people who were charged the fee, will increase significantly.
When I donated my money to the cause, it was more in appreciation for the last year and a half that I’ve been a member. It was not in anticipation of any guarantees that the forum will be available to me 24/7, 365 days a year. There are people who might feel that because they paid a mandatory fee for a service, they become customers, and as such, are entitled to make demands that at present don’t even have to be considered.
In other words, if Pekka feels the need to shut the server down for a week for any reason, he shouldn’t have to put up with a bunch of squealing people, indignant over the fact that they paid a required fee which implied a guarantee of service in their minds.
No, I think we should keep it voluntary, but also make it an ongoing effort to remind people that things like this do cost somebody money. Up to this point, it has been all Pekka, and that just wasn’t fair.
mguna

Hi there Belmondo,
What I was trying to imply is ...one can access the same kind of contents or privileges as before only that with paid or subscribed members, more can be done. Not too sure what they can be, but then this can be discussed and whether this is indeed necessary or that paid members be known just as paid members without any "special" privileges.
The reason why subscription was recommended as it's not fair and it should not rest on one person to shoulder the responsibility.
You do have the same sort of thoughts..
"This is not to say that people shouldn’t be encouraged to donate annually, but they should not be required to. "
IMO, most persons here will want to be part of the team and be called "members". If donations are asked, one may not know how much to give or how much is enough.
The members here are hugh and it only requires a small token sum.
Maybe such a request can be made and the responses measured/noted.
As I've stated I'm game (donated) but this does not mean that I have or feel special or that I want to impose my feelings on others.
This is a damn good site and I'm happy to be here.
:)
Regards
GunaM

Subscription have pro's and con's
pro's
funds can be estimated
eliminate users that only want to cause trouble
every subscriber pays the same
get more than non-subscribers
con's
users won't subscribe
users expect more when paying for a service
users sign up for one period then unsubscribe which then can be compared to donating
some users will think they are better or deserve more than non-subscribers
to be effective a subscription would have to provide more than non-subscribers get otherwise a lot will not subscribe
In my opinion the con's outweigh the pro's.

Donation made by PayPal.
Thank you so much for the effort and money you put into running this forum. Being a newbie I have found it to be an extrememly useful resource.
I think of the donation like what is used for Public Radio. Member supported. No extra privileages, just the warm fuzzy feeling you get knowing you are supporting something that benefits many people.
I wouldn't mind seeing a button on the top of every page that says something like "Please click here to support CDP Forums" or something like that. It took me a long time before I noticed the link in the sig block to the donations page.
Thanks again!

I think people that can't spell are more creative... how else could we come up with all the different spellings for the same word. :D Besides, I'm a product of the New Math era when they didn't teach phonics (or is that phonetics?) or any other the other stuff that most people had the benifit of after they found out it was a mistake. So I see nothing wrong with CDS and his spelling. :D
Oh, alright, count me in too... but if CDS starts spelling everything correctly, I quit! ;)

Did anyone get an acknowlegement when they sent in a donation? On other forums I've donated to, I at least got back a automated thank you, but I didn't get anything this time. Although it would be nice to have gotten even the automated acknowlegement (I know Pekka is just as busy as the rest of us), I wuld like to know if my money got to the intended person and didn't go down a black hole to who knows where. My spam filter has been known to eat the wrong message from time to time, so I thought I'd ask rather than keep wondering about it.

No, Pekka, I didn't get sent to the link with the cute little girl in your picture. All I got was the Paypal message saying they took the money out of my account. I did expect some kind of automated message (not necessarilly a personal one from you) letting me know it went into the correct account. After several days of nothing I began to wonder and then after a week I figured there wasn't going to be anything. But it did concern me that maybe the donation didn't make it to where it was suppose to.
Thanks for clearing it up, Pekka. And you are welcome. It's well deserved.

:lol:Marie, I am taking a small cue from your style: I changed the font color of my signature...even a jaded, emot-i-con-al-ly (I made this word up) challenged (read as: emoticon despiser) person such as myself has fallen prey to you positive influence.:) :) :)
BTW, the phrase is something I use a lot at work, where sometimes very intelligent people forget that we aren't all mystic computer gurus. It seemed fitting here too, we sometimes forget that the point of this forum is to learn through free exchange of meaningful thoughts and observations; but we still type up duds once in a while, and even click submit after we've read what we said!!! It serves as a sort of disclaimer...
I get your humor, I hope you get mine.:) :) :)

Hey Pekka! Great job with the website, I love it!
I sent a PayPal donation several days ago. I hope to be able to help out each year. I'm also available to help with the website itself if there is anything for me to do.
Keep up the good work!

Pekka - From a marketing standpoint, I think it would be appropriate to pick a week every year to put a '$upport the Forum" sticky at the top of each section. I, like several others, only hit one or two sections, and I don't even touch the navigation bar at the top of each page. I ALWAYS watch the stickys.
Just an idea!

As my message with Paypal donation mentions, I've enjoyed this forum for months, but only today discovered costs of the forum and an ability to make donations. The 'donate' menu button goes unnoticed to easily. I agree with others that a notice (like perhaps 'This forum entirely supported thru your generosity') would only help others know, so that they can make donations in gratitude for the information and enjoyment obtained.

Initially the donations went really well as you can see in this thread but in time people tend to forget things, which is only natural :) I do not want to push it too much, though. To ensure future I think I'll put Google ads on bottom of showthread before the reply button (they are text ads and no flash stuff) and all those who have donated or bought from the POTN shop won't see the ads - although the google ads can really be useful for all as they are selected by content for each page.

Pekka, I can't speak for everyone but I 'm sure many share my view that we would reather be kept informed about your financial needs for this forum than suddenly find it no longer here !!! That would be a killer...this place has become a home for me !!! I really, really , really apreciate what you folks are doing and how it has helped !!! Please don't be shy about stating the needs of the forum !! Is there any way we could do something like donate old camera equipment to be auctioned off on line or sold on ebay ??

A forum that I use: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php? uses a small ad at the bottom, and it's not too intrusive. It's mostly amazon.com ads for related literature.

nope..if you notice, when you're adding things to your cart, it suggests a $5 donation "to the cause". I do believe some of the proceeds from the POTN shop go toward running the forum, but it's nice to give a little extra sometimes! :-)
That having been said, I've been wanting to donate a bit, but with a paypal balance of about -$800 (yes, that's a negative),it's going to have to wait!

we could have an auction part of the site where people people can sell theire gear here. When the auction closes, The forum will recive some money ( like ebay would) and the owner,. People would trust this place better than ebay. Just my 2 cents

What kind of ad revenue do you get from the forum?
(I run a website with ~3000 hits/day and have made $13 over the last month, so I'd expect you would get quite a lot...but not as much as you'd like :D)
I'll send a donation when I have some spare money (I am currently putting everything towards the 350D...)
I think a sponsership with B&H is a good thing. If you get a referrer link, so that when forum members want to buy something from B&H they click the link to get there, and then you get a %age of the sale.
Anyway...Great website...

okay, whatever. I love the forum and appreciate the good person who created and lovingly maintains it. It serves as a classroom and a camera club to me and has helped me improve immensely. I have gladly donated and will donate again. I am not gripping, just curious. If someone says, I spend xxx a month what's the big deal of saying, gee all the gentle readers have sent xxx, and hey, now I only have to put xx in...that's all.

It's ok to ask. I am sure Pekka would let us know if he had received funds for several years of financing the forum.
