Spotted this in a field in the English Lakes - I was up at the nuclear plant today and took a side route. Shows that not all sheep are stupid!

Are those "Downs' sheep? I don't recognize the breed. Cute shot however and yes, it does appear there is at least one 'smart' one among the flock.

They are Herdwick sheep. Interesting that most of the sheep in the fells are 'hefted'. That means that there are no walls or fences - they just know their own territory and don't stray from it.

I think the smartest one is the one all by itself in the green grass!
From it's posture, it looks to me like the one on top may be trying to add a few spices to the hay.:)

Thanks everyone.
I did hang round to see how it got down and up. Down was easy - it just jumped - up I didn't see. I wonder if they take it in turns to give one a 'boost' up! :D
Anyone remember that story of the sheep that had learnt to roll on their backs over cattle grids?
