This is the shot of the week for me. I don't know what it is . . . but I waited a long time for it to come back. I only got off a few rounds, but it was enough I think. Please name this for me if you can, and what do you think of my 'catch.'

I think it's a Sibley's of some sort. Yep, it's a Sibley's Guide to Western bird.

:-)

Nice shot.

I think what you got there is a male House Finch.
Nice Shot

Another nice shot, RJ! Keep 'em coming ...

LOL, thanks JZ, yep a House Finch . . . to me they are all rare and perhaps the last of some exotic breed that only I have the photographs of . . . and then I pinch myself and am thankful for taking up a new part of the hobby I know nothing about. I will learn Thanks Scottes for the link, but I would rather shoot the little cusses than spend all day to name them. I will try to not bother the members thusly. HJM, do you like them or are you just pulling my leg . . . I am kind of walking tipsy.

RJ,
Hell man, I'm going to move down to "Near Tin Cup WY"
Seems you have just about every type of bird and mamal know to man down there. I've got to spend some time around there.
Nice shot.

Thank you IanD . . . I was laughing that last week in one day I shot a moose, weasel, elk, deer, owl, canada goose, pheasant, a bunch of ducks, wild turkeys and a little bird I have not ID'd nor posted. I found a little four point buck and a few buffalo last Saturday. Can't wait for tomorrow.

I wonder if the better glass and a fast body are letting me do better work . . . 'cause this is sure fun. I even saw a heron tonight but was too slow . . . story of my life. But I did find several hawks. Oh for more hours in ones day.

Thank you one and all.

No pulling of legs occurring, RJ ... I've really been enjoying your images.

As far as the tipsy thing ... well, have you been carrying a flask on your adventures into the wilderness? A little something to help you stay warm? ;)

Great catch!

Looks like you photographed his "good" side. Nice capture (but I still think the weasle is cuter). All those animals should be lining up to have their picture taken with your new lens!

We have several of these coming to our bird feeders here in Ark, U.S.A. Here we call them purple finches. Here they are very inquisitive, sometimes sitting on the perch of the feeder outside our window and studying the interior of the house. Very interesting birds. Nice shot .

Thank you everyone! I am getting to like the little devils . . . however my better half to two thirds twahcked me about the head and shoulders, she says I can not see. Thusly on her behalf . . . I post the photo 'she' says is MUCH better than the first.

Not to get you in hot water, lol, or anything like that but which do you think is the better photograph?

I agree with your wife. #2 has nice lighting on the face and a catch light in the eye. BUT... I really like #1. He seems to be telling you to take his picture from his "good" side.

Of course your wife is right. Mine always is.

Yea . . . I guess I should have know. Sometimes I feel like that Queen of Hearts guy, from the tv show. It gets old sometimes, lol. But I guess I have gotten used to it.

Hard to say which one is best. I think they are both beautiful.

I'll take the second - I'm a sucker for a catchlight.

I like #2 better but not by much, both are great captures. You must really like that new lens.

Scotter . . . yes I am in love with it for sure. I added a 1.4 TC to it today. That is a sweet rig. Anyway my thanks to all, and my wife for always being 'right.'

Thanks Larry . . . you are kind.

Far be it from me to gainsay your better half. We might say that her choice looks to be the bird's feminine side, and yours a more manly posture.

I can go with that . . . thx.

Outstanding RJ! I agree with the "Boss", #2 is better. With all the women in my life, I sometimes feel like Mel Brooks, in "History of the World, Part 2" when I walk around and say "It's good to be the King!" They just let us act like we are the ones really making the important decisons. :D :D

RJ, can't argue with your wife. #2 is better. Will you guys (and that goes for you too, Skip) ever learn? LOL!!!!

Yes dear. What was I thinking.
Get 'em both, dear. ;-)

The first line is correct.:)

You better not is my response to the second line:mad:

I like the second shot the best and I think the bird is a common redpoll finch.

RJSorensen
19th of April 2005 (Tue), 07:34
This poor little bird is causing quite a stir . . . among families even, lol. Regardless of what he is, he/she, she/he is a handsome/beautiful.

And I am always wrong on matters of taste and culture. But I am strong. We each have our good points.

RJ,
Both are fantastic shots, but I have to agree with your better half that #2 is the best capture.
Hope you got some ice for that lump on your head ;).

#2 for me, too. Sharper, highlight in the eye, & a heroic pose. Very nice!

nice shot of the finch ;)
#2 is better, wifey's right

You know . . . I should just pick what I like. And then use something else. One would think I would learn. Does it go without saying that I have to be checked out before I can go out in public? My color/style/LOL are not what they once were, either.

I love the second one. Great bird. Great lens! Aw, must have the 100-400! :-)

Blah i only get black pigeons near my house... urban wasteland

i think the first one has better color but my attention is drawn to the fuzzy left edge
yet the second appears sharper/better focused
Not like you can take this shop again =p , but i would have likes slightly more DOF the twig is too sharp in comparison to the bird

color can be easily fixed in photoshop (unless thats somehow unethical for you) so i d choose the second one

purple finches -- I am listening to two males and one female in the mornings, they fuss and fuss. the odd thing is they are fighting over the hummingbird feeder I just fixed up for the spring. They jump on the feeder and act like they can get anything from it. they are also feeding on the suit from the bar-b-q grill (they are feeding on the drippings from the pork grease in the ash). They are all over the hummingbird feeder.
