This may be off-topic for a digital forum, but I am so pleased with my new !D MkII/70-200 2.8 IS for water skiing pictures that I am thinking of selling my NIkon F5/70-200 2.8 VR and getting the Canon 1V HS. Have any of you had experience with the 1V HS using Provia 400 slide film? Several people have told me that Nikon lenses are better for saturation and contrast with slide film than the Canon, but the Canon lenses are so great in accurate color reproduction with digital sensors that I would think their film cameras should be a good as the Nikons. The reason I want to change is two fold: one, I would not have to carry the extra body and lens to Mexico, and, two, the F5 does not seem to be as good as the 1D Mk II in tracking focus and exposure.

Ever thought of saving a few bucks and getting the Eos 3?
A buddy of mine has one, it's his favorite camera he loves the super fast 45pt eye control.
Plus it's about $800 cheaper. He shoots weddings with his, it's as fast as any camera I have ever seen. I think it gets even faster with a booster. Just a thought incase you find you shoot alot more digital in the future. Might as well save a few bucks.
He shoots portra 160 and the pics look fantastic to me.

MrChad - - Thanks, that is useful information, as the EOS 3 (I think) has the same AF and metering system as the 1V HS. However, I really need the 10 frames per second rate of the 1V HS for water skiing pictures, as I need to track skiers going up to 70 mph at a distance of 40 feet away.

I doubt if there is a major difference between Canon and Nikon glass, maybe a shade warmer or colder, but nothing you couldn't get used to and deal with.
However if you are really worried, before buying a 1V HS why not get a cheap secondhand eos 650 or any other old film body or try to borrow one. It won't be any use in the long run, but it will take your Canon lenses and shoot on whatever film you like and so you can do a test and make your own judgement.

Go for it. I still shoot more film than digital. I only shoot Fuji. Velvia, Provia, Astia, NPH, NPS, and NPZ.

Several Ni**n users... ;)
Canon owners would of course say the opposite is true!
I truly doubt that you will be disappointed with your film of choice as seen through good Canon glass.

I tried the EOS 3 before finally opting for my EOS 1nHS (a threat of divorce re my spending habits prevented me from opting for the dearer EOS 1V ;) ). I preferred the feel and handling of the 1 series and although I'm happy with my 5 focus points and 6 fps, the 45 focus points and the 10 fps on the 1V would be superb for the kind of shots you're after.
I suppose it comes down to feel and confidence re the camera in your hand. IMHO I'd rather spend the extra money on a better 'tool' than later regretting my decision when I'm trying to make do with the one I ended up with.
Hope this helps a little,
Cheers,
Barry

I love my 1N, worked like a dream when shooting bike races, however now I never use it, it's been outdone by my 1D :D

I have used the 1v-HS with the 70-200 2.8, w/ slide film (velvia, provia), portra 400.... I loved this body, I wish I still had it. Color was excelent with that lens. Focus was very fast and metering was right on!
I would sell the Nikon and carry around a little less weight.

I have owned a 1VHS for about 4 years. I will not part with it.
Arguably the best 35 mm body ever made.
The weathersealing might be usefull taking water skiing pics.
You will not be dissapointed with a 1VHS

HI im one of the buffalo bills team photographers, and i used several canon 1vhs cameras for several years. They are absolutely the best cameras ever made for film. I used nikon equipment for years and one day lost three touchdown catches in a row due to their horrendous AF system. The very next day i put all my nikon equipment on ebay, my 400 2.8, 600 f4, 300 2.8, etc. and purchased CANON equipment . I started off with the 1N and progressed up till i purchased the 1v HS NEVER mind with any of the other canon cameras, theyre all babies compared to this one. With the special battery pack you can shoot at 10 frames per second with continuous uncomparable autofocus making tack sharp images no matter what the speed of the object youre shooting < I just sold one of these camera on ebay and only got 800 bucks for it. I have ONE more that im going to sell, if any of you are interested ,please send me an email and ill send you some pics of it. I purchased them for around 2000 each , so its an incredible deal. Heres your chance to get one cheap. I send my equipment into canon once a year for cleaning and adjustment. Dont believe the hype about nikon lenses being the best for contrast either. Ill send you a shot from one of this years games that will show you how great this camera is. Just email me at laser_14624@yahoo.com and ill be happy to respond. james

As far as af tracking goes EOS 3 and 1v are on about same level, while focusing with all 45 af points selected is a bit better on 1v. As far as fps goes, EOS 3 has "only" 7fps with booster, while 1v gets to 10fps. Also weather sealing is better on 1v then it's on 3. As far as feel in hand goes they are about same, especially if you use them with booster (PB-E2). With PB-E2 you change half of side grip too and it's not just vertical grip as it's with low-end cameras, so feeling is same then. But 1v does give you feeling that's it's a bit harder then eos 3.
I still shoot quite lot of slides (mainly old Velvia 50 and Provia 100) with both of them (next to 1d and 1dmk2) and if those few extra $ aren't problem, then I would suggest you to go with 1v and not with 3.
