Does it matter?
I have an ixus 40 (SD300) and accodrding to the reviews it isn't as good as my previous ixus 400. However, I think it is just as good as that was, if not better. Software moves forward at an incredible pace.
I know that the powershot 500 image qualiy isn't as good as the 400, due to noise, so why should an SD 500 be better than an SD300?
More pixels sell more cameras, but they don't neccesarily improve those cameras
What I'm saying is don't go for more pixels just for the sake of them and get it all in to perspective.
The manufacturers are taking the P***

Yes, I know, but as I said, is it any better?
The ixus 500 isn't as good as the ixus 400 'cos it's noisier and the resolution increase isn't worth jack.
Why should this be better?
My Ixus 40 prints off superbly at A4, My Olympus 765UZ prints off several times clearer at the same print size. Together they cost the magnificent sum of £400!
There's a lot of nonsense talked about compacts - just remember pixels sell cameras!.
The only way to get a real increase in quality is digital slr and Canon have just released the successor to the EOS300D.
I want one.............................

the sd500 has a larger image processor so the quality may be better. its the sd400 i am worried about... for me the only way i would upgrade to the sd400 is if the new features on the camera make it better for low light shots. i don't like the looks or price of the sd500 so i am not even considering that one.
