People who are sensitive to light

I was doing an outdoor shoot yesterday and the guy is really sensitive to light which meant he was squinting a lot. I had them positioned with the sun to their back and they were in the shade. Any tips on how to deal with a situation like this?

A very large piece of cardboard painted flat black. Have an assistant hold it where the subject is to look, close, but not so close that it will be in the photo & tilted so the sun doesn't hit the face side. This will help the eyes to relax just like football players do with the black stripe on the cheek below the eyes.
