Well, I called B&H today and placed my order! After renting the 100-400L and reading several reviews of numerous lenses I decided to go with the Canon glass. I can't wait to get out there and do some shooting with it, hopefully it will come next week before my trip up the California coast to Monterey.

I might have to actually get an online gallery now.

Good choice! It was my first 'L' lens as well... and my favorite until I get the 300 2.8 IS :)

Remember to shoot at f7.1-f8 when you can for maximum sharpness on that lens. 4.5-5.6 is often quite soft and will disappoint you when the shot counts!

Way to go Zach! Adam I have tried to use your wisdom in my shots . . . thank you. I like the push pull zoom so much that I can not even begin to tell you. These little birds I have been chasing round . . . gosh! I just find them and pull up on them, zoom to fill frame or the end of the barrel and let the auto focus, given enough light 'blink' and I got 'em! They only sit still for 1/60 second. LOL, but I only need 1/250 of a second to pull the trigger on my 20D and 100-400. It is better than a skeet shoot. AND L glass feels as good as a clean Browing over-under. I think birds are attracted to the off white color.

You will love your 'new' lens on you upcoming trip Zach. Be sure to let us know how it works out for you.

I got a 70-200 4L, wondering why I really spent that much money on something that probably wasn't much better than the 75-300. Then it arrived, I held it, took some photos, saw the results. Suddenly I was thinking "ahhhh, now I see why people go for the L stuff".

Welcome to the L club. As expensive as heroine just a bit less physyically demanding.

Even better than a Citori? LOL Maybe I will have to paint my Baretta AL391 offwhite:lol:

Thanks for the comments everybody, I look forward to contributing more in the future.

As expensive as a female hero? Oh, you mean the illegal drug heroin.

I have the 70-200 F2.8 IS and sometimes use my 1.4 teleconverter. I thought of getting the 100-400, but I lust after the 300 mentioned above. I'm going to rent it for a week of intense shooting when I get my 1ds mark II.

...just a bit less physically demanding.

I don't about that, my arm wants to fall off after a full day with my 100-400 but it sure is worth it.

Well, guys, I feel like I've stepped up and poked my head through the fog and rain into the bright sunshine....playing with the big dogs now...the Canon "L" glass club!...that exclusive club of folks who could accept nothing less than the white & red. I ordered my 70-200 f/4.0L USM Autofocus on Saturday as well as Canon''s 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Autofocus Lens...to go with the 10D that should arrive in a few days. Just those 2 puppies mean that I eat beans for the next two years. Oh well, its gonna be worth it...I'm cranked, man, I'm talking cranked. Every bug within 80 feet will be tagged and followed for scientific experimentation...and later update....Ciao, Mackroe

You see - that's why I don't do this "rental" thing, in the end it costs more than a real thing.

Congradulations on your purchase !

Yep, somethings are just worth 'whatever' one must endure to procure. I think I will add a fininshing touch of a 'red' stripe 'round the over and under.

You made the right move, The "L" glass is the best on earth :) I have a 70-200mm f/2.8 with IS and it is on my 20d 99% of the time for motocross and wild life stuff.. I'm hoping to get a 300mm IS real soon if I can find the right price. this was my first shot with it so I saved it ..

Mackroe, you'll have to give your opinion on the 100 2.8 macro. That may be my next purchase and I'm always looking for another opinion.

I must say that I have a feeling my first L lens will be the 24-70 f/2.8 L.

ever notice, all of the good photo stores setup shop in dodgy parts of town, just like drug dealers. pretty soon, you find yourself making more and more trips to see your 'dealer' - in fact you know each other by first name. instead of 'E', 'H', 'P', etc. it's 'L' - and when you get it, it feels soooo good

you tell yourself you don't need anymore. you start to justify it in your head, as if you're trying to convince someone... 'if i don't pay the cable bill for 2 more weeks...' 'if i don't eat lunch out for a month...'. then you find yourself lying to your significant other about your addiction (no, that's not new... ...oh, you've seen this before... ...i'm just going to go for a walk...). as Belmondo pointed out, your mind goes and you forget you've got some 'L' stashed away in your bag - probably to hide your addiction...

then one morning, you wake up and you realise you've spent thousands and thousands of dollars for your addiction. then the guilt starts to set in...

that lasts about 5 minutes, then you grab your gear and go shoot, and it feels great

it's a good thing you aren't addicted to that ni**n $h!t - that crap will ruin your life

Well since I can't afford (justify) L glass right now I just might take a can of White spraypaint to my Berretta 687 Silver Pigeon II. With a little red Pin-striping I might just get my FIX.

I see some of you are shooters (shotguns). Have any of you photographed shooting tournaments? If so can you give me a couple pointers?

The UPS man tried to deliver my package for the second time in two days and was unsuccesful. My wife had to go pick some one up at the airport today and of course thats when the UPS mas tried to make the delivery. So I decided to take the scenic route home in hopes of seeing that little brown truck. Just about to my house and I look down a side street and there it is! I make a U-turn and pull up and say "I think you have a package for me!" Sure enough, theres my little box!

Oh the anticipation is finally over. Now if it would just stop raining here in San Diego. Of course I'm headed up the California Coast to Monterey for the weekend, So I'm hoping for a little sunshine up the coast!

Now it's time to start making a list for my next purchase. I'm thinking about a macro or WA lens.

lost, Never thought about shooting a tournament, that might be fun. I have a couple ranges in easy distance from me. I'll have to give that a try!
BTW, I'd leave the Silver Pigeon as is.;-)

The 100-400L was also my first L lens.
If you're into wide photography then I recommend the 17-40L
