My son and I fly gliders and we would like to video some flights using my S5. I would like to attach the S5 to the wing strut of the Schweizer 2-33. Any suggestions for a simple way to secure the camera? Here is an image of the glider with the strut visible. Max speed would only be about 70mph.

Hanging anything off an aircraft is not something you just do...sorry.
There are FAA-approved mounts, pods, blisters, etc but there is a process involved before doing so...

Check a glider forum for STC'ed camera mounts, but there may not be any. Otherwise, like Jay said, you need to get the FAA to sign off on the mod (even removable ones).

I have been an Aircraft mechanic for 12 years, and a 337 applies to MAJOR repairs or alterations. Anything that is a temporary mount is not a major alteration or repair. You can screw a dock for a portable GPS to the top of the glare shield in an airplane without having to do any paperwork for it if you are the owner of the airplane or just a log book entry if you a re a mechanic doing it for the owner. Clamping a temporary camera mount to the wing strut would be the same situation. You would still be liable if it fell off and caused injury or damage to someone/something on the ground whether or not you have a 337 for it's installation.

Thanks for the replies. I have the OK from my club as long as I can design and safe mount that will not scratch the paint. Any suggestions?

wrap electrical tape around the lift strut to provide paint protection, then use suitable sized, good quality hose clamps to secure a larger rectangular tripod quick release plate to the strut. mount camera on the tripod quick release plate and adjust for the view you want. Temporary installation not major alteration or repair. log entry only.
