Taken yesteday with my EF17-40L. This is a great lens... I'd never noticed just how close it's MFD actually is!!

LOvely shot - nice hoverfly in flight :)

For shots at this magnification, no you don't need a macro lens but I'd guess your max mag is about 0.2:1.

Yes, it is a pretty shot and great that you got an in-flight hover :-)

Its quite surprising how well the wide angles lenses do getting decent insect pics, I have had a few rather nice ones with my 24-105 - but yeah, you do need a macro really lol.
