There's a trick to that. When it's time for practice, sprint cars spend several laps warming up at reduced speed. That's the best time to set the slow shutter speeds and get the panning shots, when the cars are circling the track at a street car pace and not a racing pace. The cars in the sprint car shots are moving slower than the racing karts I photographed the day before.
