Wasn't sure if this was the right place for these shots, but what the heck. Took these last year. I like em.

Oh yeah, the first image uses the night-time portrait mode so that it flashes to capture foreground and holds open to capture background light. IN this case the effect of the shutter being open is the blurring of the flames, of course.

OK The 1st one blows my mind.
How is it possible to catch such radical motion of the fire yet have a still shot of the arms?
I love images like this but have never been able to capture one with contrasting elements such as the moving fire path and motionless arms without the help of post processing software.

I think Brad answered your question already.

The flash froze the arms, then the longer shutter allowed the bright fire to be blurred.

Brad, These are pretty COOL! I like the first shot best, but hope the person in the second didn't get burned. ;)

Thanks for the positive feedback on the pics. The Digi-Rebel is my first SLR so I am a total newbie. I'll try to post some more of my attempts at photography soon. This weekend I picked up a 50mm f1.8 and a bounce flash so I've had some fun with those. ANy other advice about "must have" accessories for a budding hobbiest photographer on a budget? :)

Nice shots brad. I especially like the body burn, that is well photographed.

Brad how long can you keep the flame on your back? Most the heat is going upward so I am guessing you have 10 seconds. Do you feel much heat?
