sandisk Extreme III 8GB CF more than one type?

I just bought 3x 8GB extreme III from adorama the ones list 16.98 after rebate yet wondering why they another 8GB extreme III at 3 bucks more?

Yeah, the one that's $3 more is actually the older version. Go figure. Good luck with the rebate. From what I've read about Sandisk rebates, you're gonna need it.

I was wondering the same thing also. I think if you look closely at the two different models of cards that one ((probably the older one) is rated at 15 or 20 mb/s and the newer or newest one is rated at 30 mb/s. That's the only difference I can see and at any rate a great price for either card. And yes, it does take 6-8 weeks to get your rebate or prepaid visa card in this case, but I have always received the correct rebate amount from Sandisk. glenphoto

I just bought one of the 16GB Extreme III CF cards for $25 after rebate. Didnt need more but the rebates got better as usual for up to 3.

The older Extreme III (20MB/sec) uses a flash technology known as SLC (single level per cell), the newer ones apparently use MLC (multi level per cell). MLC is cheaper per bit and generally thought to be less reliable. There is not much practical difference in speed between the two for our purposes.

Except for 10MB/s?That's the peak transfer under ideal conditions, downhill, with the wind at your back, in a vacuum, rating. Your camera doesn't get anywhere close to that throughput.

Rob Galbraith has tested a large number of card brands in many camera models. Here's his 40D results (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_multi_page.asp?cid=6007-9257). You'll notice that the "old" EIII 8 GB does about 6.9 MB/sec with JPEG; the "new" one does a bit over 7.5. In RAW, they're even closer: 9.7 MB/s vs 9.96. So you get a little faster performance, but not a whole lot. And nowhere near the rated speed.

The real reasons for buying the faster cards are for card reader transfer speed and for performance in your next camera.
