Other than trying to get a sharper focus on the peak, what could I have done to capture this scene better?

40D w/ 24-105 @28mm and a CPL
1/6400, f/4, ISO 400
Used DPP to give a little bit of saturation (108) and bring down the brightness (-6)

The only choices you have are,

1. shoot like you did and try and fix in post processing.

2. Use GND filters, to try and bring it out.

3. Try several RAW exposures, bracketting the exposure using shutter speed, then convert to a HDR file to bring it out.

In the end though, what I have found works best, use a tripod of course, shoot in RAW, metering for the light area, and take a shot and chimp it in the preview window and histogram.

Shoot some with manual focus, your AF is likely to be confused by this contrasty scene.
