Not a flattering angle, plus the composition is off.

yeah, it was a quick whip out the camera quickly shot though.

I had to come back to this ,.. there is something about it I like.

I think the legs,... clouds,. and off side nature of it all is really pushing this towards something very unique,. that may have been accidentla of course,. ;) but still smaks of interest and originality,..

I guess what I'm saying is I really like it,. but I'm not sure what particular aspect makes it so attractive to me.

I think you need to remove the description about hovering ,. and look at what the image conveys and title it. (I have ideas in my head but I'll keep them to myself so as not to influence ...)

But to me the action that I see of the bird is quite deliberate and tells a small story.
I've taken lots of bird photos,. and some of them might even be considered good,... but I doubt that any of them would leave the viewer asking "Where is this fella headed?"

Your image leaves me asking that among other questions.

Good job spotting it as something worth posting! :)

hey, thanks. I appreciate the feedback. The photo hasn't been given an official title yet, so I may come up with something more appropriate. I'm open to suggestions. ;)

Anyway, I agree with what you said, 'cause there's something about it I really like as well, and I can't place what it is. that's precisely why I put it up here, to get a different perspective on it. :)

i too like it, and the composition... very interesting... however, i'd be tempted to take the crop tool to it to take out some of the blue sky... leaving maybe as much blue as there is sea... but then, maybe that's too much symmetry, spoiling it all... like most others here.. i like this one :D

This is a forum for critique and the best critiques are honest ones. I don't know the people I'm critiquing so we're not playing "nice" to be nice to a friend. If he wanted just to post the image and get nice remarks he would have posted it in Nature section.

If a photo is great you will usually know it right away without having to think whether or not the composition is correct or whatever. In my opinion, although the rear view of the bird is quite original, it's not a great photo. Maybe the bird takes up too little space in the frame, maybe there is too much uninteresting sky at the top, I can't say for sure, but since you are looking for critique, my gut impression is that it's nothing special. Sorry.

thanks for all the replies. It's very interesting to get honest alternative perspectives on things, and I'm not afraid of a bit of harsh criticism, so don't be afraid to dish it out.
I'm also happy to receive compliments, so don't hold back there neither. ;)

I like it a lot and I'm not just saying that to be nice. I like to think of it as a bird all by himself looking for a meal in the middle of the ocean. Solitude.
The sky's great, the clouds are great, the color of the water and the level of the horizon are excellent. Focus is darn near perfect. I would frame this and hang it on my wall. Good job.

I agree with Littlenose I would probably crop some of the blue sky.
