I managed to sneak in an hour after work in the British Museum in London on Sunday and found these ancient masks. Quite stunning.

Hmm, a tad more research and I've just found out these are Mexican. Ooops. Still, there's probably still something strange about them.

Second homie needs a new grill eh?

Nice shots. Was the background this way, or did you expose and flash?

Thanks very much. The cabinet was completely black with just a downlight exposing the mask. No flash used, just ISO 1600 and a nice 50mm f/1.4. This is pretty much how it looked in the flesh so to speak.

I take it that photography is permitted inside the British Museum? I didn't know that. It's very unusual, as so many museums forbid photography.

Good shots, by the way.

Thanks, Roy. The museum almost encourages photography, there were even flashes going off in the exhibits and no-one batted an eyelid. I only went because I saw a photo of the place, and therefore spent some money there, had they not let photography I wouldn't have seen the picture and spent some money, so everyone's a winner. I wish all places thought that way.
I got some nice shots (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ankehuber/) there and can't wait to go back.

Thanks for the information Anke. It encourages me more to go to the museum (I would go anyway). I get fed up with all the museums and galleries that don't allow photography - even without flash. I suspect though, because it's because the point-and-shooters can't turn their flashes off.

British Museum here I come.

I hope you've got some low light lenses, it's pretty dark in there :)

F/4 is my limit. Not enough? I could always up the ISO.

Hmm, just might be, I was at f/2.something quite a lot and ISO1600 a fair amount of the time too.

Even so, its a great day out.
