I am completely clueless about famous photographers.....not completely...but very much so.

I was wondering, what photographers do you know using Canon camera's and lenses, that are pretty well known in the photography world - Digital or film.

Its weird because almost all of the photographers I have looked up, researched, watched work all use Nikon......so I'm wondering, where are the Canon pro's at?

Links to their work would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well lets try looking at any major sporting event. Count the white lenses, they are Canon. Count the black lenses (if you can find any), they may be Nikon. So we've got a few pros there.

Then lets look at nature photography. Where nikon excel at wide angle canon excel at telephoto so the majority of nature photographers are going to be packing some long white IS glass. If you aren't finding anyone you aren't looking very hard.

Speaking of Nature photographers,. there is "my good friend Arty" Morris... aka Arthur Morris who literally wrote the book on bird photography....

If you have any idols in sports photography,. then you have idols shooting Canon ...

Well, all of VII agency use them. Steven Eastwood uses canon. That guy that won this last avant guardian prize uses a canon. Hmm... have to think some more. The tricky part is that alot of the famous guys are into large and medium format due to thier work. Avedon used 8x10 alot from what I understand. I would suspect that Leibovitz and Meisel use MF or LF in the studio too. I think i also saw a pic of Patrick D in the studio with a LF.

of course I know that sports photography is more often than not Canon...
the huge white lenses are recognizable from a mile away.....
I'm just wondering if there is such thing as a famous photographer anymore....like the BEST sports photographer or a photographer so famous he's a celebrity in his own right.
you know?

James Natchwey is pretty much a celebrity, even though he'd probably think thats crazy. I can only imagine what you think after being where he's been.

See whats funny about that VIIphoto thing is some of the photos there suck.

I checked a few links, there where some great photos. However some of the people there, Antonin Kratochvil being the name I'll mention, seem to specialise in out of focus, badly framed crap. It was funny looking though his homeland insecurity section as I probably would have deleted almost everyone if I'd taken them. But you know, he's famous, and its b/w and probably from an expensive camera, so they must be good, and I'm just uncultured. I'm not saying the guy is no good, but from the selection shown on that site I've seen better photos taken by my 5-year old.

Agree with Citizensmith. What's the deal with OOF pics! though some of his (non-OOF ones) are nice.

No you were right the first time-they suck

Never ,EVER let art make you feel uncultured

It's just one of many excuses the art community use to justify some of the dreadfull sh*t it outputs

Well, regardless of what people think of his or their photojouralisitic style(VII). They are considered to be in the elite of the elite(photojournalists) and Canon seems to think enough of them to feature them in two page ads in PDN to sell their camera. It is all subjective though. I'd have to think there's something special about the guy to get into that circle. I'll have to find more of his work to get a feeling for him. I tried to get access to the VII archive and was denied by their coordinator. They lock that stuff up pretty tight.

Monte Zucker (http://www.montezucker.com/) is a well known (some would say "famous") wedding and portrait photog. I know he uses Canon digital gear, along with other larger format film equipment.

Actually, there's a fairly sizable list, with examples, at the Canon Explorers of Light (http://www.photoworkshop.com/canon/explorers/index.html) gallery.
