I never personally owned a 1D but my shooting partner did. I came from the 10D to the 1DMKII. This is an amazing piece of hardware. Alot of functionality to master but the quality (assuming you've got decent glass) is outstanding. I have taken prints to 20X30 and it would rival any film camera using comparable glass.

Depending on what you are shooting, you could get comparable quality from the 20D. If you need the additional custom functions that you get with the MKII and things like the higher fps then this is a good camera.

Be prepared to do more PS processing than with the 1D. I had the 1D and now have the MK2 and it needs more usm.

Monique,

When using your 1D did you shoot jpeg or RAW?

The 1D jpeg files still tend to offer the least need for post processing of any Canon DSLR I have used,. but the 1D MkII raw files still blow the 1D away for detail and processing leeway.

I agree with Jerry though,. the MkII files will want a bit more USM,. but in the end you can certainly acheive a better overall image,. sharper and more detailed,. with a good post processing workflow.

Thanks, i always shoot in RAW. I had the 20D, a bad one. Canon has take that back.
So thats why i have been thinking on the 1DMKII, specialy for shooting birds as i did with the 1D.
If the 20D is sharper then the 1DMKII , i will take the risk to buy a 20D again.....

The 20D is not sharper than the MKII. All cameras require different processing. One thing I noticed about the MKII files is they can take a ton of USM, color enhancing, etc. and produces an eyeball-slicing, ultra-sharp photo, without halos or other USM side-effects.

You will have to change your workflow. No question there. But you will be more than satisfied with the results.

Monique, I own both the 1D and 1D MK-II. You have to remember that the 1D has a very weak AA filter and a CCD rather than the CMOS sensors of other Canon cameras. This means images from the 1D need very little sharpening.

The MK-II needs about three times the level of sharpening to get the same results. The image with the right sharpening is superior to that of the 1D, having more resolution and better shadow/highlight detail. It has less noise at high ISO's and you can push the image much further in processing. The MK-II is better than the 20D for shadow and highlight detail as well.

Like you I shoot RAW and I use C1 to do my processing. If it is detail in your pictures that is important you, then get the MK-II in preference to the 20D. You will not be disappointed.
