View Full Version : Fresno St. vs UCLA football at the Rose Bowl

I just recently began shooting for The Collegian, the Fresno State newspaper. For my first ever football game I had the opportunity to travel down with a couple sports reporters from the paper this past weekend to photograph the game versus UCLA. Went down the night before and stayed in a nice hotel in Beverly Hills, which had free cucumber water in the loby. What a great experience to be at the famous Rose Bowl, and for the first time. The same place that housed the very first Super Bowl and Vince Lombardi. Being down on the field seemed so surreal, it was like a dream come true. Im just glad I didn't get run over by one of the players. The game was electric and fans were extremely loud. At one point the stadium was so loud I couldn't hear the sound of my shutter. I learned so much shooting the game...like wear a hat, I got very sunburnt. Shot with my 'ol reliable 20D, 300mm f/2.8L for most of the game, except for the first picture I had a 24-105mm f/4L.

I forgot to mention that I had never taken so many pictures before in my life. Total I shot 1,250 frames, which included warm-up, game time and post-game.
Note to everyone....that many frames takes a long time to edit. Good thing I have and editor at the newspaper to do most all of it for me.

Note to everyone....that many frames takes a long time to edit. First, nice work out there, I get the sense you really enjoyed the experience. #2 and #4 are my favs of the bunch by far, nice captures there. Did you have the ability to move much? I only ask since there are a few pretty backlit ones in the group and while the timing is great (great on all!) backlighting can be really tough to deal with.
Oh yeah, forgot to mention...you suck for this!!!:lol::lol::lol:

Great shots. I was at the game in 2005 when Fresno State came to USC. Amazing game and fans really travel well.
Go [insert name of team playing UCLA here]!

Bryan,
What impresses me the most is that your equipment list states that your longest focal length is 70mm? Is this true or did you use a longer lens for these shots?

Sorry guys,
I suppose I should read the post completely. The pictures are amazingly well focused! And the exposure is very good.

I did have the ability to move around. I could be anywhere between the 20 yard line and the back of the end zone on either side of the field. And I was moving quite a bit, however the game started at 12:30, so I had to battle with the backlit being on one side of the field, the other side was perfect lighting.

Thanks, that 20D doesn't give many frames per second, 5 or 6 i think?, so it makes timing and anticipating action that more important.

Very well done, Bryan. I'll bet your dad is just busting his buttons with pride ;-)
You captured the action quite well, just like being there and it sounds like you had a wonderful time.
Got to love Coach Hill and his willingness to take the Bulldogs to play any time, any team, anywhere. GO DOGS

Thanks Skip, he was pretty jazzed and so was everyone at the paper, they all thought I had the best shots.

You know, I've been telling him that for a while now, but he just won't budge. Maybe you could mention it to him for me.....

The first picture is how the sports page looked. The second picture is the photo spread that ran in the middle of the paper.

Thanks. The first major run of the game was a wake-up call as I couldn't pan fast enough across the field and all the images were blurry, but I caught on quick.

Thanks. As of now I don't have any input on the design of the paper, but I wouldn't mind putting in my 2 cents. My photojournalism teacher said the photo spread had too many photos. I don't know if I would agree 100% with that.

Looks like your teacher does not ascribe to "A picture is worth a thousand words." Must be a writer, not a photographer

I know, if it wasn't for that bum of a kicker. We would actually be 4-0 and probably ranked 15th-ish.

Yes and proud of it, but he gets it from his mother. Dang, I hate to lose another piece of equipment, but lookout you're not getting my 1D MkIII. Way to gooooo B.C. The Collegian should be honored to have sports magazine images for their paper.
