I'm going to ask a question here, rather than on any other forum, out of fear of getting banned.
This has been addressed by Mods before. Apparently the ads (and I can't say I've ever noticed them...) rotate at will and no specific retailer is actually an official supplier or sponsor of POTN...

So, I'm thinking that on the 24th... before the Star Trails Event I'm probably going to go down early morning and maybe hike around the place a little. I've been looking at pictures and maps and satellite stuff... and there's some pretty awesome stuff around there. But, that all depends on if I wake up in time.
Anyone care to join? If someone is going to go, that will "force" me to actually get up and go. :D lol

Why is Sonic Cameras a sponsored link on this website, when they are clearly a common bait and switch outfit like to many others?
The ads are served up by Google. Pekka has no (or very little) control over which ads are shown.

Ah yes, Weaver's Needle. Hiked out and around that a couple of times. Once from the Peralta trail head, once from Lost Dutchman Park area. Note: it's a lot shorter hike from LDP, and your vehicle will like you better going that way too. At least winter before last-those washes were brutal. :D

I don't think I'll be doing Lost Dutchman trail. I was just wondering if I was thinking of the right landmark.
I was looking at some maps again last night and there are some roads that go through the Superstitions sort of. Might be interesting to drive those and see what I can get. But who knows... it's still a week a way. :)

JB..FYI..there are no drivable roads into or through the Superstitions but about 180 miles of named hiking trails and a couple hundred more of un-named trails. So, if you don't want to hike at night, a potentially good spot would be at the Weavers Needle Lookout right off the 88 just a couple miles east of Goldfield, big paved parking lot well off the road, short walk to the lookout and of course a 360 view. Or, if you want to get higher, you could go to Fish Creek Trail Lookout about 21 miles east of Goldfield.
ps. don't bother looking for the Lost Dutchman; I already found it:D

Lucky. I wanna see the Northern Lights so bad. Will... one of these days. :D
I remember one time the lights were visible in Flagstaff thanks to some occurance it was visible pretty far south. but I don't think I saw it...
I was thinking about it but now I won't be able to as I am going to Irwindale, CA to do a racing show for Speed Channel that weekend.
Sorry :(
lucky! I miss watching the speed channel. parents got rid of it. and I've wanted to see the HIN shows that they broadcast cause I might be in the phoenix HIN show.
Cardinals tickets are very difficult to come by, go to sports.ktar.com and enter the raffle, a little better odds than the lottery. Went to the Pep Ralley last Friday, must of done some good. Good thing we don't carry around gear like that.
hey I just entered. have an email address for it so I can use you as a referral? Oh and nice shots! love the first shot of the flag waiving

I thought of Jay this weekend when I was shooting a cycling event (what a mess that ended up being) and this giant thing came rumbling by overhead. I was wondering how he would frame that big critter coming in for a landing. :)

Thoughts?
I did tweak the adjustment of my 24-70 and am pretty happy, but I did it in a non-technical manner. Once I get replacement parts for my tripod, I'll do the formal calibration on the northlight site and see what comes of it..

Instead of being gimbaled via three springs and set screws, it's able to move in any direction by loosening a tension ring.

Coolio. I guess that's pretty nifty. I also saw somewhere, that with a T/S it's a lot easier to get the whole view in focus.
They had a picture of a flower field and all the flowers were in focus. Is that true? Couldn't you just do that with say, f/11 or higher?

I think there was an article in Outdoor Photographer on that. they were talking about how Ansel Adams used his bellows lenses to get all of the landscape scene he was shooting in focus LINKY (http://www.outdoorphotographer.com/search.html?q=Scheimpflug) you can use the bellows lenses like the tilt shifts. (for landscapes, now Jeremy is interested!!!)

Haha! Nooo... my next lens is the 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I just have to not spend money... which isn't going so well. :p lol

I have been looking at the 2.8 as well. Is it really that much different, 1 stop, the 4.0 is really sharp, but its not so good under the lights at football games, thats were i have been stuck. Increasing the ISO from 400 to 800 or 800 to 1600 gives the same output, or step down the exposur -1 and adjust in lightroom/PS ??? If is the Bokeh at 2.8, then ok, nuf said. Maybe I need the 300 prime that Jay has, but still only 4.0

I used the f/4 in Mexico and then used Tammie's f/2.8 IS a couple weeks ago and I really like the f/2.8 WAY better than the f/4.
Way sharper, IS is awesome, and the bokeh is beautiful. :)

Here is a shot I took using the 70-200 f2.8 NON-IS during a high school football game. No flash, just using the stadium lighting.
edit to include:
Shot in JPEG, into photoshop, quick crop, ran a framing action, then save for web to reduce to under 150K.

Waiting on the BBT tomorrow so it will be a domestic day. If my 2x shows up before dark, I may sneak out to give it a try over at the local airstrip.
Probably be a pretty low key weekend with some minor housekeeping issues like paying bills and such.

So if I do Mirror Lock + Cable Release + Tripod = No movement? Theoretically?
Theoretically, correct...
I usually trip the mirror, count to five, then trip the shutter.
Be sure to leave some slack in the release cable so you don't induce movement by inadvertantly pulling on it.
One other thing to be aware of: If you're shooting in Av or Tv and you don't have your eye to the camera, your meter can be fooled by light coming in the viewfinder and screw up your exposure.
Either shade the viewfinder (or cover it completely with the little rubber thingie that came with the OEM strap...) or else shoot manual.
ETA: if you're doing long, long night exposures, cover your lens with a hat or black card while you open the shutter, then move the cover. When you get to the end of your exposure time, re-cover the lens before you close the shutter. This trick will eliminate any unwanted movement at the start or end of your shot. I think I read that in Outdoor Photographer...

Live View moves the mirror up out of the way and energizes the sensor on a continous basis.
Mirror Lockup mearly moves the mirror independant of the shutter cycle so you avoid "mirror slap" on long-ish exposures. I don't remember the exact numbers but there's a certain shutter speed range where mirror slap becomes a real concern but above that speed, it's not. Sorry I can't remember what I read on that.
