No problem there, I hiked quite a bit last winter. My lightweight hikers are just the ticket since they survived Squaw Peak 3x per week :).

Hey all! I was wondering if I could get some recommendations for tripods. I need something relatively cheap, ok, really cheap. Less than $100 if possible. I have one now but I hate it. Got it probably 5 or 6 years ago, before I knew anything. It's a quantaray or something from Ritz. It's huge and heavy.
I've tried looking but am so confused by all the options.

what's wrong with huge and heavy? you kinda want a heavy tripod to help stabilzed it while trying to shoot. anyways, not much I can think of for your price. i was able to get my tripod for under $30 cause my bro works for bestbuy...

Do NOT risk your expensive gear on a cheap *ss tripod...please!
If you want really lightweight shoot and scoot support, get a monopod.

I guess there is nothing wrong with it other than size and weight. I just liked the feel of the light ones, how much easier they are to tote around, etc. The one I have no is never level either. No matter what I do, it always leans to the right. I can't tighten some of the knobs tight enough.
Guess I'll just have to wait on it.

A good tripod is as much an investment as good glass.
Have you taken a look at Induro? Tempe Camera carries them. I have one and I've been quite pleased with it. Fairly light, very rigid and extremely utilitarian with interchangeable feet (plastic and steel spikes) and the ever popular articulated center column (it can be set at any angle from straight up to straight out sideways.)
They're more or less Gitzo knock offs and are distrubuted in the US by (IIRC) Sekonic, the light meter folks.

Trust me, you don't want cheap, I been through that route. I finally picked up a Gitzo and wish I did it the first time. It's light, strong and most important I trust my expensive gear on it. Do yourself a favor and look into something not cheap.

Caught a bit of an interesting break:
On a whim, I tracked down the gentleman who wrangles photography for the Fly In at Casa Grande this week, shot him an email asking if he could use some help...
Lo and behold, he wrote back and said YES!
It's a volunteer gig (Experimental Aircraft Association...) but what the hell, it's a subject I know and love and it might get me some better access than I would otherwise have had.
Beyond that, who knows?
Funny aside: He's the Mayor of Show Low...
Soon I'll be just like Jeremy. Rubbing shoulders with politicos!! ;)

Fly Ins are a little different than Air Shows since attendees need a day to get home in their planes.
Two guys flew in today from near Portland, OR. Each has a home-built biplane. 1600 miles in an open cockpit .. now that's living!

Just a quick note to say that Lightroom has released update version 2.1. It fixes a few things and adds some new camera support. (Anyone with a new camera?)
I loaded the beta a few days ago and it fixed a major snafu with 2 monitor support! Okay, I'm happy. Now going down to get the broken 2nd monitor replaced and possibly get another one if they are playing nice.

The thing about LR is that it's a lot simpler and quicker to edit photos. It's obviously going to be the basics, compared to Photoshop. But with every version, it gets better and better. I use LR (still the old version) and love it. It's easy to use and it's quick. :)

Question for the group:
Anyone have the new CS4? If so, how do you like it, and are there any bugs? I'm killing myself working on PS7, and really need to upgrade, but I don't like jumping to brand new versions of software. I can't keep spending 1.5 hours building a collage manually, since it seems all the automated tools need a newer version of PS.

I have talked to Frank, and sadly Pixel Creator doesn't work with PS7. It's one of the reasons I need to upgrade.
The lady for whom I shot the infant portraits just orderd 10 8x10 images, an 11x14 gallery wrap, and a 11x14 collage. It's taking me far too long to edit these, and I think I really need to upgrade.
