I am a complete idiot when it comes to photog stuff.....
BUT.....and a big "but"......
My oldest brother is a professional photographer in Nebraska....
He just spent a week here in town at my house and said I HAVE to come to this site and offer myself to you guys because of what I do.....
I am an off-road driving instructor....Yup...that's really a job....
Well....after taking my brother all over the desert for photos he said I have to take you guys out and start a new business getting photographers were they didn't think it's posible to get....
I drive a 2009 Toyota FJ Cruiser and run a local (non)club here in town....
I am trained in desert survival and have over 20 years experience getting people to places they thought were off limits to the average Joe....
What I propose is to take any of you guys out to see old mining towns/indian ruins/petrogliphs or anything else you may be interested in seeing/shooting.....Make ya' a meal....hang for the perfect shot....and camp or get you home at the end of the day....
If you have a spot on a map you want to go...but there's no way for you to get there....I'm your guy!!!!
AZFJ.org is were I hang out.....I'm "Homedad" there too.....I am a 45 year old stay-home-dad of two adopted kids.....My wife owns her own business too.....
If I don't sound like a complete retard....PM me or post up with any ideas....
This was my brothers idea...not mine... ;)
But I might be able to get you guys the shot you're not gonna' get anywere else....
This is my "bucket".....as you can see....I'm an off roader....not a photographer:lol:

Hey Homedad, welcome to the forum. That sounds like a cream o the crop kind of job to have. I'm sure lots o people need instructing as when my family and I are out quading, we see some pretty stupid moves happening.
I trust you carry lots of spare parts like drive trains and u-joints and the like.
I would certainly vote for posting what type of services and prices you offer hear on this site. This is where all the AZ people hang out. Although perhaps posting on Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Nevada might be a good idea too.
That 'bucket' is just what I was thinking I need so I can do exactly what you're talking about. The quad gets the gear all dusty. And me all wet and cold if the weather isn't cooperating.

So you ask what I carry.....
I carry every possible thing you could ever need to survive for at least one week in the desert with no help or contact with the outside world....
I have every electronic gaget you could ever need....Multiple GPS/dvd/laptop/full survival gear/full recovery gear/food/water/camp/ and of course my trusty coffee pot!!!:p
I'm the guy that teaches people how to get there....and how to survive if all heck breaks loose....and you don't get there....
I am the guy that gets the call when someone does screw up, and the poor wife has to sit in the desert until someone else saves there butt....Then the wife say's something like "I ain't never going in that desert again until you figure out what the heck you're doing";)
When I'm done with you....you hope for a break-down just so you can practice what you learned!!!
BUT.....The reason I'm here on THIS site is....
1. I can take you folks out to places you never get to see...
2. I have enough people in my circle that I can take out 1-10 people anywere you want to go.....show me a spot on Google maps...and I'll find a way to get you there....
3. I can't find anyone else that offers such a service....
4. We might just all have one hell of a good time....
5. YOU might win that photo contest you've been after!!!
6. I already have found quite a few ruins and such that no one else has seen...let alone photoed....
7. You won't see any smog or pollution!!!
This is Gillette 20 minutes from town....not even "out there".....I can get you to some really neat places....

Ok 'Homedad', here's a more serious question.
What are your feelings about off-roading in the dark? Because the best light tends to be early morning and late afternoon, for photography. So, if you were to get to that "out there" place, it will probably take a while to get there. So you'd probably have to leave either early before the sun rises, or not get back till after the sun sets.

I've run a night desert run every Friday night for the past six years(6:30pm every Friday at Table Mesa/I-17).....I understand that any photo trip would need to include early mornings or sunsets/moonrises.....http://www.azfj.org/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1610
For that I would suggest I take all my gear....you bring all your gear....
I take care of the "getting you there and back" you take care of your "shot".....I can make it as long a trip as you would like....I cook a mean steak over a campfire and breakfast to camp for!!!
I do own an FJ....And a Tundra....And have a bunch of buddies who drive FJ's also....this could be a bunch of fun for all involved....
Wheelin' in the comfort of a/c...unlike the "jeep/hummer" tours
I am active in the local FJ/Toyota community and taking one of you guys with me for a freebie would be no problem at all....Maybe you could get me some photos for my upcoming website;)
I'm just testing the water to see if you photog guys like the idea....
Here's a photo of the rig ready to head out into the wild....
And with each photo I post...You can plainly see photography ain't my forte'

Until around 8am Thursday then off to Fontana, CA.
Followed by Vegas and Atlanta then a couple of weeks off. The first due to the schedule and the second because it's Luke Airshow Weekend and I decided I'd rather go to that than Bristol, TN...

Good question...
The Thunderbirds are the main attraction for Luke and AFAIK, there is no military demo team signed for Yuma the weekend before.
Shame they killed the airshow at Willie (they got the BAs just about every year) but it was becoming a silly affair with monster trucks and Robosauris, etc kind of mucking things up. Friday at Willie was great! Just go park outside the fence and shoot the practice day.
Wonder if I could do that at Luke?

Anyone know if the Phoenix area has a "catch all" Circuit City?
Seems each market has closed all but one and that one lone store is handling the liquidations.
Don't figure I'll find anything dSLR-ish but I've seen some hellacious deals reported on G10s.

I guess some changes won't be forthcoming however as there will still be a 30-mile diameter Flight Restriction in place.

If the F16 + Armament display is done like I think they'll do it, it's a great UWA photo op.
They basically lay a symetrical pattern of everything it can carry in a semi-circle around the plane. Might have to ask a buddy of mine at work if I can borrow/rent his 15mm fishy for that.

Yeah Homedad, we are all very official Canon shooters here.
Your trips sound like lots of fun. And I'm sure there is a market for what you want to do. Although I think that the pro photogs who are making the amazing landscape photography are already 4wheelers and know how to get where they want to be. Your market would likely be the wealthy hobbyist. You have to find the guy who already has all the gear he wants so he's willing to pay you for the transportation and fabulous steak. That's tricky since us Photogs have serious GAS (gear aquisition syndrome)

Paul Kinslow "World At Your Feet" Close-Up
Nature Photography Class Feb. 28 & March 1
Superior, AZ: Explore "The World At Your Feet" with a two-part class in close-
up nature photography beginning Feb. 28 (Saturday) and continuing Sunday
morning with a roundtable discussion/critique session at Boyce Thompson
Arboretum.
Scottsdale naturalist and photographer Paul Kinslow sees images many people
miss: iridescent insects glowing like tiny jewels on flower petals, and
butterflies, such as the subtly colored Soapberry Hairstreak, camouflaged to
blend seamlessly into their environment.
In December, a selection of the artist's graphic work was exhibited in our
gallery <http://ag.arizona.edu/bta/paulkinslow> and on the final weekend of
February he's offering this photography workshop. This unique two-part class
begins with a session from 9:00 a.m. - noon and continues Sunday morning at
9:00 with a roundtable discussion during which the participants will view,
study and critique the previous session's work. The Saturday workshop include
both indoor and outdoor "in the field" instruction, where this multi-talented
painter and photographer will explain camera and lens techniques that allow
close-up imagery, and offer tips on where to look for elusive and hard-to-find
subjects. $25 FOTA members, $32.50 nonmembers

Made a whole separate post for this, but thought I 'd ask you guys too.
Hey all. I know not everyone likes All-in-ones, but I do. I'm looking to replace my Epson 6600 which was the replacement for the 6400 which seems to get clogged print heads. At the time of replacement I learned that this was a common problem with the Epsons.
Anyone know if they have addressed this issue in newer models. Or, can you recommend an all-in-one with print, fax, copy, scan capabilities. I need it to have a flatbed scanner that is across the entire top of the unit. In other words, does not have a wall against which you must place a document to be scanned. Also, a scanner top that lifts off would be very helpful.
My budget is $150-175. Any personal recommendations will be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

In fact they did. A Sgt from their Media Relations Department was kind enough to get back to me.
He basically said that TTL would be open as normal but to keep in mind who was arriving and that it may not be business as usual.
Here's a CS3 creation that I desperately wanted to bag "in camera" but Mother Nature failed to deliver enough wind to fly the flag at the right moment. This is the American Flag that flies near the Paddle Boat marina on the south side of the lake:

Well, considering I lived in Iran for two years back in the '70s and I've held a "Secret" clearence in the past, I think I'm several places in line ahead of you.
:D That's sweet!! I wanna go to Iran... or somewhere over there. lol
Here's a CS3 creation that I desperately wanted to bag "in camera" but Mother Nature failed to deliver enough wind to fly the flag at the right moment. This is the American Flag that flies near the Paddle Boat marina on the south side of the lake:
Awesome job. Too bad it couldn't have been done in real life... but still looks great. :)

In fact they did. A Sgt from their Media Relations Department was kind enough to get back to me.
He basically said that TTL would be open as normal but to keep in mind who was arriving and that it may not be business as usual.
I've found that most Police Departments are usually pretty good at getting back to people. I emailed the PD in El Paso, TX to ask a couple questions. I believe the Sgt. responded that night.

The brunette is (I'm told) Brooke's roommate and long-time friend.
I guess they were shooting "Brooke Knows Best" as "Hogan Knows Best" went Tango Uniform after the divorce and Nick's jail time.

Hi Arizonian POTN'ers!
I am heading to your great state next month for some fun in the sun. My question is has anyone been out to the new baseball park Camelback Ranch (http://camelbackranchbaseball.com/tickets/single-game-tickets/)? Which baseline would be better for shooting from 1st or 3rd for a 1:05pm game.
Thanks,

Thanks

Using a softbox or an octabox... plus reflectors for fill... :)

It all depends on what I want. I've shot with softboxes, umbrellas, grids, and straight reflectors.
Softboxes/umbrellas are normally used to soften the light as they make the light source relatively larger (given the placement doesn't change). For portraits, I'll take softboxes over umbrellas as they offer more control and umbrellas spill light everywhere.

I've used the vagabond, ab800, and softbox outdoors and they worked, but it was a calm day so I wasn't bothered by the wind. didn't use a reflector as I didn't bring another stand to hold it.
The next time out, I'll probably take the 30" and 45" umbrellas and bounce the light.
Did some indoor testing and with the 45" umbrella, power at 3/8, I was getting f8 as iso 100 with the stand about (stretch both arms out and the stand is one hand and the subject at the other) distance.

Good luck with the umbrellas, Steve. Bounce umbrellas are so inefficient compared to softboxes/brolly boxes. I could only do it successfully in the shade/low light.

Well, I have a neighbor's son to shoot this Saturday. So I'll bring the stuff and try it out, worst case I can just light him with speedlites or the AB with reflector only, I plan on using a boom arm to get the light in closer and keep the stand out of the way. It will be interesting, I have him for a couple of hours and he only needs one or two images for his year book. So get those first and then experiment.
