Shark?

I was at the beach recently and was taking some shots of the sand and ocean. When I put the shots in Photoshop for editting I noticed an odd black thing sticking out of the water.

I am in Maine and in winter it is very cold; could this be a shark though?

Very hard to tell from the shot,. there are marine mammals that like that climate a lot more than any shark would,. but they tend to stay further from shore,. although an Orca may follow the harbor seals in... still from here it does not look like an Orca fin,.

Honestly, it could be any number of things. A seal, whale, buoy, or even a shark. Extremely difficult to tell from this shot. Is this the whole pic or a crop? If there's more to the pic that might give some perspective to what we're looking at, it might be easier to narrow it down.


BTW...I was born and raised on the Maine coast! Heard you guys were getting a bit of Nor'Easter a couple days ago. Get any good shots of it and/or the after effects?

This is a crop of the shot but the rest of the shot is just open beach and water. That balck fin shape is the only evidence.

Yeah.... we got about 22 inches and I lost power for two days. I did get some pictures but haven't had a chance to put them on my computer and upload them yet, I will when I get the chance.

Can't tell from the picture but a shark has a vertical tail while a dolphin has a horizontal tail. Both have dorsels so if the visible thing in the picture is a fin it could be either. It it's the tail, it is probably a shark.

The shots were taken at Higgins Beach,Scarborough, Maine.

Haven't spent any time at Higgins Beach, but been through Scarborough many times.
