Nice pictures.
Sometimes, life is just unfair. This certainly is one of those cases.
God bless her.

This is absolutely incredible. Unbelievable. Moving. Possibly the very best effort of documeting something like this I have ever seen. In the individual series I loved number 1 and number 3. But the colllage is incredible.

Very touching thread. All those pictures certainly tell a story. Thankfully, Grandma Jo-Jo apparently has good support from loving family. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice pictures.I worked with the alzheimer's,
and its a very unfair disease. One in which the
family suffers much much more then the person it seems.

I think it must be the nightmare of every living person to get this illness and be so vunerable to everything
not knowing what's going on around them .
as I said, it's awful for all concerned
I know I myself , as I am thinking now in all my senses
I would wish never to have shots like it, shown of me if I ever came down with the illness
I will make sure now and write it down so that no one ever does.http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif
I don't want that vacent look left for future generations and not the person who went before
as the illness gives out a picture of a different person altogether
I am saying my opinion only. I am talking of loved ones
not of a good documentary which is excellent for different reasons
one of my lovely kind brothers had a nervous breakdown in his late teens
I visited him every day in the hospital but never want to see pictures of him there as he was a different person and he would have hated to know I had pictures showing him not quite 'with it' .
he wasn't bad but he was not real well
at the end of my life I certainly don't want to be shown in shots if I am not knowing a thing about what is going on.
the pictures show to me one of the main reasons why I dread that illness.
I will be too vunerable to clench my fist and say
' no I don't want that' when suddenly they flock around
and I am put away 'out of harm's way'
nothing to do with anyone here but that is how I feel and always have
about this illness

There is a series of images of people suffering from this disease in the Albany, NY Amtrak station. The images make one uncomfortable because of the loss and futility of the disease, yet I guess they reach out to teach us all about a fact of life. I wish your grandmom the best on a birthday which we share!

Really touching. I like the ones where she's laughing. Makes you think there's joy to be found if you know where to look

The collage is excellent!
I know what it's like to lose a relative to Alzheimer's. My great-grandfather succumbed to the disease in the 80's. One of my most vivid memories (for the good and the bad) was a visit we made as a family to his home a couple years before he died.
I just wish I could go back in time and talk with him for hours on end. He was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, born in the late 1800's. I can't even imagine the history he witnessed. Unfortunately, by the time I had a chance to meet him he couldn't even remember his own grand-daughter (my mother)... :(

Thanks to ALL of you who have encouraged and have been touched by this serries. I shot several yesterday as I traveled about 3 hours away to my home town (that to say I took a lot of time to pick out the most tastefull images I could).
I wanted to put a collage on my photoblog tomorrow that will honor my grandmother capturing her as she is now, but in a good light. When I say captured her in a good light. I am not trying to create something that is not there, but try to capture some of the sweet moments she still has.. This disease has been in my family for generations and we are no strangers to it nor the lives that it has taken. Thank you again for sharing some of my emiotions
p.s.

The shots of your grandmother are very moving. My mother, while still with us, has been lost to dementia for a few years now and it is a terrible thing to go through. Your pictures though bring out the person she once was (and still is deep inside). Great job!

All of the pictures are absolutely amazing. My grandfather currently has alzheimer's and it's devastating. Great job capturing these moving photos.
