People around the net have been posting images with the 18-200 they received in their 50d kit, so lets start a topic and get the ball rolling.
Post em if you got em.

So, what are your first impressions of those of you who own the new lens?
Good, bad, indifferent? Comparisons to other lenses?
I'd love the range but I'd like to hear owner's remarks before I pull the trigger.

Some pretty good shots here, just how macro is this lens? What's the MFD?
Lets see more, so what does everyone think, is this lens similar to other lenses you've used? Better/worse than expected, sharp/soft fast AF, slow? build...so on and so forth....

C'mon 50D owners hit us with more :D with tamron coming out with their new VC version of this lens & sigma has theirs, I'm excited to see how Canon's version measures up. I'll be snagging one of the 3 (most likely not Sigma... not a fan of it) as a nice lens while out with the family @ the zoo/parks/ fairs n such...

I second Lore's comment. I have the 28-135 IS lens and a 40D. I was planning on getting a Tokina 12-24mm to cover the wide end, and then going with the 100-400L to cover my long end for wildlife. If this lens is proven to be a true performer, I might consider going for it instead. While I doubt that the 18-200 can stack up to the 12-24 Toke on IQ and sharpness, it seems to match up with my 28-135mm lens. If I had this lens I would also pass up the 100-400, since the versatility would not be as important, and get the 300 f/4L IS prime. The 300mm lens is lighter, has the ability to be shot at f/4 which I like, and if I am not mistaken has a closer minimum focusing distance than the 100-400. I know that I would probably replace the 18-200 eventually with better and faster lenses, but in the short term on a budget the 18-200 IS and 300 f/4 IS sounds like a pretty good setup to get me by doing wildlife shooting. Plus I could get a 1.4X tc for the money I would save not having to purchase the 12-24mm Tokina lens, which would put me at 420mm with similar IQ to what I would get on the 100-400mm at 400. (probably not as good, but you get the idea.) If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the feedback. I was also wondering about the durability of the 18-200mm lens. Does it have a metal or plastic mount? Comparable to the 17-55mm IS lens? If it has the same build as the 17-55, I think that I am going to go for it. Thanks in advance for the input.

This is a nice walk-about lens but I have mine up for sale and knew that would probably be the case when I purchased the kit. There is nothing wrong with this lens. I just have my lens selection the way I want for what I normally shoot so I really don't want to see this lens just sit idle.

The 18-200 isn't built like the kit. It's more comparable to the 17-55. It has a metal mount.

Sorry, my bad.....must have mis-read...
This is from SLRgear.com
http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1219/cat/4
"Notable in the new lens design are two aspherical elements and 2 UD glass elements in a 16-element/12-group formula. Mechanical construction was described to us as "mid-grade": Not the built-like-a-tank level of Canon's L glass with gaskets and a metal barrel, but at the same time, far from low-end "plastic fantastic" construction as well. The complex optical formula also delivers a minimum focusing distance of 17.8 inches (45 cm) at all focal lengths, aided by a zoom arrangement that puts 5 lens groups in a helical zoom assembly, with only 80 degrees of rotation needed to go from maximum wide angle to maximum telephoto. The new 18-200 is 3.1 inches (78.6mm) in diameter x 6.4 inches (162.5mm) long at maximum extension, weighs in at 20.99 ounces (595g) and takes a 72mm filter."

I'm new to DSLR can somebody explain this to me? I took two shots at 200mm from the same distance. The first one using an older Canon EF 75-300 III (Bottom) and the new Canon 18-200 EF-S IS (Top). I was surprised with the difference in magnification for both shots. In order to get to the size of the 18-200 (at 200mm), I had to change the EF lens to 135mm. Is there something wrong with my 18-200? Why is the zoom shot at 200mm looks so much smaller than the 200mm shot with the 75-300?
Thanks in advance.

due to the crop factor of the sensor in the camera.
1.6 crop factor makes the shot at 200mm= 320mm where the one taken at 300mm=480mm. which makes the 18-200=28.8-320mm lens,75-300= 120-480mm lens

I think that it has to do with how the internals of the lenses are arranged / structured.
I vaguely remember some earlier discussions regarding this magnification issue with the Tamron and Sigma lenses. Apparently the magnification at 200mm would be the same if the lens were focused at infinity.

If you look at the EXIF data, both images report the focal length to be 200mm. Considering that both images have been shot on the same camera body, crop factor does not play a part in the magnification or rather the Field of View.
You may consider reading the comments on this page: Same focal length, but different image sizes (http://photo.net/nikon-camera-forum/00Nmyl)

this lens is just amazing. The IQ is very nice. The IS works very well, although at 200mm with the shutter button pressed half way and the IS active, you can feel a very slight vibration of the IS working. I guess this is normal because I heard the IS on the 17-55mm isn't as quiet at the 18-55mm IS kit lens.

You do realize there is a difference between EF and EF-S lens?
AFAIK the EF-S lenses have an extension, which goes into the camera body and hence cannot be used in full frame cameras, as the mirror would touch the back of the lens and may break.
The EF-S structures should not have a bearing on the focal length of the lens. As always, I stand to be corrected.

How can you tell if you got a bad copy?
I got my 50D with the 18-200mm is, and frankly I hate it. I took it off the 1st day and haven't used it since.
I'm getting better shots with my old sigma 18-200.
The canon seems really soft, no shapness at all. Even at ISO 100 the photos look grainy.
I know it's not the camera because any shots with my sigma 10mm or canon 50mm are stunning.

After reading this thread I've bought this lens to replace my 17-85 which always seemed a bit soft. So far I'm impressed - longer reach and better IQ. Here's a couple I took on the way home, no pp other than resizing and exporting to post (which has lost some detail).

I got the 18-200mm as part of a 50D kit. I was going to sell it imediately, keeping my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS as my walkaround. But after trying it out for a couple of outings I have kept the 18-200 and will get rid of the 17-55. The relatively small loss of image quality for the main usage I have for it and the loss of f/2.8 is made up for in the range and convenience of this lens.

Great pics. Just registered on the forum to try and decide between the EF-S 18-200 IS and the Tamron 18-270 VC. At this point I'm strongly leanting towards the tamron lens, but this is largly due to the fact that the 18-270 VC thread is 20+ pages long and full of fairly decent 100% crops. Unfortunately the downsized images don't give much of an impression of how sharp the canon lens it - would anyone mind sharing a few so that I can get a better idea?
Thanks,
Craig.

Hi There - newbie here; I got this lens w/ my XSi came as a kit.. Here's some pix I took over the weekend. I took the 10 week course and loving photography so far. Only thing I really dislike about this lens is the zoom creep or lens creep. C&C most welcome please.

Do you think its a good idea to ditch (as in sell) the kit lens (18-55mm IS) I have with my XS and get this instead? or no?

Absolutely, if you can find a good price. I'm on an XSi, bought the 18-200, and literally haven't used my kit lens since. Personally, I even get crisper shots at around 18mm with the 18-200 IS than with the 18-55 IS. And the convenience of such a broad zoom range is obviously awesome.
If you do a lot of your shooting at around 20mm, you might check some reviews just to make sure that the 18-200 is as sharp at short lengths as the kit, but, again, in my experience, it outdoes the kit by a hair.
And yeah, it should all depend on finding a good price.
Edit: Oh yeah, as a poster above said, the lens creep can be a bit annoying. You'll get used to flicking the zoom lock switch pretty quickly, though.

I just ditched the 18-55mm IS and 55-250mm IS for this lens. Hopefully it don't disappoint and the reach is just close enough to the 250mm. I picked this over the Sigma 18-250mm OS andTamron 18-270mm VC. Did I made the right choice??

You will be very happy with this lens it is excellent and is a wonderful lens when you need to travel light and hauling around all the photo gear is not an option. You will be also pleasantly surprised at it's macro capabilities since it has such a close minimum focusing distance compared to many other zooms. The color and contrast is also very good.

Don't know exactly what you're getting at, but a 34% longer focal length actually is quite a significant difference. Suppose it depends on what you're shooting.

I use the 18-200 on my 40D more than any other lens (with the 10-22 being a close second) and I love the 18-200.
The folks at the 2 local camera shops also speak highly of the lens.

Between 170mm and 200mm the lens does not zoom much at all - to me 200mm is effectively about 175mm.

I had originally gone with the Tamron 18-270 VC and ended up getting rid of it after just a few days to pick up the Canon 18-200--- happy I did. Overall, I really like the 18-200IS. Eventually, I think I'd like to pick up the Canon 17-55 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 L combination for indoor/lower light or other controlled situations while keeping the 18-200 for all-purpose outdoor family situations (amusement park, zoo, beach, etc.).

I already have 17-55 IS and 55-250 IS. Have been thinking of upgrading to 50D and there is a B&H deal for the camera with the 18-200 IS as the kit. How would the 18-200 compare to my 55-250 IS? Would it be worth it to buy the kit and sell the 55-250 or would there be a drop off in performance. I guess I could always get the kit and sell the 18-200.
Thanks

So there you have it: the focal length quoted on your lens is with it focused at infinity, and will vary to some degree as the lens is focused at closer distances. As explained by Nikon, this effect is most noticeable with zoom lenses sporting long optical ratios when focused at their closest distances. It’s not a new anomaly by any means, but one which has become more obvious as super-zooms have become more common.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/bokeh-comparison.htm
You'll notice that the image sizes from the 18-135mm and 18-200mm lenses seems less than the other 135mm lenses. This is because of their IF (internal focus) design.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/18-200mm.htm
At infinity, 200mm really is 200mm.
At closer distances, like 20 feet and closer, 200mm isn't really 200mm. At close range, you'll see almost no change as you zoom between 100mm and 200mm.
This is normal for ultra-range zooms that focus as closely as the 18-200mm. Canon and Nikon both play optical tricks to allow long lenses to focus this close. Those tricks are that they reduce the focal length as yo focus more closely, which is how they get these lenses to focus this close. You probably don't realize this, but physics tells us that it is impossible to focus a true 200mm lens any closer than 800mm (0.8 meters or 2.6 feet). This Canon 18-200 focuses to 1.5 feet or 0.45m!
tl:dr you'll only get 200mm if you shoot at infinity

No fancy shots here - these were literally 'first pictures' I took with the lens after I unpacked the box.
Canon 18-200 IS arrived this morning - some quick test shots:
I must admit - these were literally quick and dirty just to see how the zoom is on this lens.
I was at work and did not have the time to mess with settings. I literally unpacked the lens,
set the camera to "P" mode, AWB, 100ISO and walked outside in the parking lot, hung my watch on the fence,
walked back about 75 feet, snapped a couple of pictures from an identical spot and walked inside of the building.
I am sure I could do better with "manual mode", more stabilization, high 'F' for more sharpness,
but I was more-less interested ONLY about the zoom capability of this lens with this test
as I have never owned a lens with this range. (had only 50mm, 18-55mm and 17-70mm)
I took two pictures:
- 1) totally wide at 18mm
- 2) totally tele. at 200mm
- (the third picture is 100% crop from the second picture.)
If I really wanted to get a sharper image - I could do it with manual
focus, tripod and F16 or higher, but I was still pretty impressed that I could tell time to a minute
accuracy (AND also able to see the seconds hand !!) standing over 75 feet away !!
I was very impressed !
So far - so good..... ;)

...a similar test from about 50 feet away....
At 18mm you can hardly tell that there is a watch hanging on the fence. (see the red arrow...that's where it hangs)
With 200mm crop - you can still tell time.
Test #3 will be with a small aperture to capture more detail, manual focus and tripod.

I know that if I want to move on - I will be able to get my $$ back when selling here or on ebay.

As you see the video you'll find a picture taken with a 7D and 18-200IS
Very dark conditions
Just to remind those that critique superzooms that is a tool, is not the camera but the photographer that makes the picture, I'm pretty sure no one told him "O no , you used a 18-200, I can;t see that photo, is unacceptable" .. no

Well
You cant really compare these two favorite lens like 70-200f4 and the 17-40 with the 18-200 in terms of pure Image Quality, fixed aperture, USM, L construction quality, color contrast etc etc.
If your trip involves taking pictures for a Book, editorial, printing, paid assignment, Journalistic purposes, well I'd take both lens before the 18-200 any day.
If your trip is just for pleasure and you want memorable pictures with flexibility without changing and carrying a bag full of lens (nice quality too BTW) of your trip, Id take a 18-200 IS and a 35 f2 prime, maybe a flash like a 430EX
That was my travel / family bag and works very nicely IMO

First off, I'm a newbie here, so hi to all. Just bought the 15-85, and was going to sell the 18-200 to fund this, but actually have had some very pleasing shots with the 18-200.. here's a relative at a wedding..I'm strictly a beginner, but this lens can give nice portraits.

i use this lens, it came with my 500D kit..
what i see is that it's a lot better when paired up with the big brother, 50D..
it's convenient, only not fast enough for me, especially in low light condition..
anyway it's great to see you guys here..
cheers..

Thought i'd jump in here. This is my first post and i have this lens with a 50D body. I feel like i cant get my images very sharp. I'm just starting to learn how to use it so this could be a big contributing factor.

All taken with the 18-200mm. While nowhere close to the 70-200 in sharpness and contrast I wouldn't want to start changing lenses in this environment to get the wider shots, especially when shooting just for fun

I've owned and rented quite a few lenses within the last year, and somehow ended up with just my 50/1.4 and 100L (my G12 is currently broken and I don't use my cheapo 75-300). Well, I bought this Canon superzoom, hopefully to keep until it falls apart. I'm quite pleased with this lens so far. Here's a couple of my favorite playing-with-my-new-toy-session shots. Full size and exif data available: click on photos to link to my flickr page.

I posted a picture of this specimen in the TS-E 24II thread. I'd usually use my 100L for pics like this. Both at 200mm.

been looking for some new glass for my T2i as the softness of the kit one is driving me nuts, especially considering its what i primarily shoot with. Based on the price and great IQ i'm seeing from this lens i think its gonna replace my kit one pretty soon. Are there any other suggestions for about the same range at a not break the bank price? i would like something just about as wide angle with maybe a bit more reach like the 18-200 has.
