View Full Version : Problems downloading a large movie file from a G9

Hi all :)

I've had this problem before with a movie that wasn't so critical, but I've just encountered it again with a movie I *really* don't want to lose. I've got a 25 minute 640x480 30fps movie on my G9 (4GB memory card) and when I try to download it using Image Capture on my Mac the thumbnail is greyed out (hence I can't select it to download it). If I try in iPhoto it says "The movie 'MVI_6868.AVI" could not be opened, because the original item cannot be found". The movie plays fine on the camera itself ...

Any suggestions of what I can do to get this movie off the camera? I've tried putting the memory card in my card reader but for some reason the card doesn't appear ... it happens with all cards I use in the G9 for some reason ....

Many thanks for any advice you can give,

David :)

I could be wrong but AVI files are not native to Mac are they? I know with our G9 i could not get it to download to the Imac but it downloaded fine to my PC so i just stopped trying.

I encountered the same problem (with large AVI files…) with a powershot S45… Finally, I found that my AVI files were only readable when I downloaded them from the camera ONLY using CameraWindow (which came with the G9 too…).

Hope this will help you ;)

:D :D THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D It worked!! FWIW, the video was of me in the cockpit of a multi-million pound flight simulator which is used to train commercial airline pilots. The experience was a birthday present from my family.

Thanks once again!!

Hmmmm things are never easy are they  When I posted that I was excited because it looked like it was downloading fine ... and yet this is the third time I've tried downloading it in this manner and I can't find the downloaded file anywhere! I've searched by modification date, the file name ... zip :( Something is even munching up my hard drive space but there is nothing to show what has done it! :(

Any thoughts? :(

Cheers,

David :)

If the file is larger than around 2GB, some external HDs formatted for PC hooked to a mac will not show at all or show for a second and then automatically disappear. Try downloading the file to the main computer HD.

Also, if the computer having that same issue with the Memory Card, you may need to download in a PC and then burn a DVD with the file.

Hope it turns out OK,

Rafa.

Thanks for your reply Rafa :) I've downloaded this file onto my internal hard drive

Is it impossible to have a single file that's larger than 2GB then? I guess my only option is to shorten the movie on the camera until it's under 2GB then try to download it ... I don't have to keep the whole 25 mins I don't think ... it's all much the same :)

Cheers :)

But if you downloaded it to you internal hard drive, then the issues might reside elsewhere... can't you borrow a PC with a card reader from a friend and try to download the file there? In that way you won't lose that dramatic crash against the Alps! :)

I have no idea about this new problem…
Does "ImageBrowser" sees the dowloaded AVI file or not ? If not, I think it is it worth to contact canon to have more details on this specific issue.
