So,

As some know i have been looking to get more into the glamour side of things and learn more to do so i need models...

I have been looking and recently jumped on both One Model Place and Mayham model.

Well i went through found a bunch of models i would love to work with, looking to spend some money as i am new and would love to work with some people with some experience to make things a little simpler. Found a couple of models locally who advertise "Willing to work with new photographers to exend there portfolio"

So i fire off a message to this one model, explained what i am looking for where i am located and what i have to work with. I asked what her rate was and any special request.

She replied that her going rate for what i wanted ( Nude/implied nude/artistic nude) was $55 per hour and min 2 hour shoot. She required 30% deposit and a PDF copy of my contract/release that she would completed fax to me and then i would paypal or drop off to her the 30% deposit.

So i did this last night did up my contract/release and emailed it to her with her rate of pay listed and the total amount to be paid as i wanted her for 4 hours.

She turns and emailed me back stating that my $70 deposit was not enough that i did not factor in the expenses.

Now i made it clear to her where i was located ect.. she is located 15 mins away.

She wants on top of her fee this.

- $3 per KM traveling expense.
- 25% of total fee for management /agent expense
- $20 food expense as the hours i require her would mean she needs to eat out.

I mean we are looking at her fee's and then almost what $150 more in expenses.

I replied to her letting her know that i could not meet her needs that the additional fee's just me way over what i have for budget for this time around that i would keep her in mind next time.

So..

Question, should i expect this from everyone?? I would expect that there rate would include something i know when i qoute people a rate for something everything is included.. and on top of that i found her through Model Mayham... i did not contact an agency or her manager.. lol so why are they taking a cut again?

Anyways.. Anyone care to enlighten me or share a simular experience?

I guess one good thing that has come out, i have no experience models looking just for the exposure coming out of my ass now from these sites :D Just not what i was looking for at the moment.

I'm afraid I can't help you on this - but I can tell you that there is no apostrophe in 'fees'. :D

I use a lot of models off Model Mayhem and OMP. I obviously can't speak to your specific experience, but I can tell you that I generally pay about $50/hour for glamour nude for experienced models, less (or TFP) for inexperienced models. I generally negotiate a fee for the entire shoot, and my shoots usually last 2-3 hours. I don't play for expenses and although I'm more than willing to send a model release in advance, no model has ever asked me for one.

Yea i got the feeling that maybe she was trying to take me... Being that i was new the board and made it clear i was new to the profession.. lol

Well, if a model told me that, I'd tell her thanks, but no thanks. Just like there are lots of GWC's (Guys with Cameras) out there, there are plenty of excellent models that have professional standards and won't try to take advantage of a photographer new to the genre. Look for those.

Yea i am,

I am right now trying to get my new website up and running.. And then i am going to start popping through the models in my area who have the look i want and have done the kind of work i want done and send them proposals.. and see what happens.

Model Mayhem has a Casting Call function. I've found that most useful. With that feature, you can define what you're looking for, what you're willing to pay, and when you want to shoot. Bring the models to you. :)

Yea i really have not played around much on there :D I really should.. ANd thanks for the suggestion.

Well, for what it's worth, my two best models have come from OMP, but most of my models have come from Model Mayhem via casting calls. Remember, if you're hiring, you're the boss and you set the fees. I often do test shoots before I commit to hiring a model for pay unless she has an extensive portfolio and numerous references.

Perhaps the answer lies in "i have no experience models looking just for the exposure coming out of my ass"

After all many of life's best experiences are shared by people learning as they go.

I don't pay a lot of models but on the rare occasion I do, I make sure we are very clear on terms and dollars before we commit. I would never pay a deposit. I would email my release to a model who was curious but she would need to sign it and be photographed with her ID as well--in person. I do help with travel or meals depending but that is all agreed to before we get into it too far.

Sounds like your model was trying to milk you. I also let models know that if I pay them, I keep the images. That's often a good bargaining point.

Sounds like a ripoff. Next time make it clear you want the REAL price.

That sounds outrageous

Mark you reminded me I need to start using OMP more... I only have a bronze account though :o

I agree with much that's been said. Offer her a round figure you are comfortable with, tell her to take it or leave it and move on to the next. ;)

REALLY !!! I mean just move on to the next model !!! To me she sounds like a game player and I do not think you would want to do business withe her.
In my area nudes for for at least 100 per hours. The HHmmm not attractive models $75.00 Implied nudes about 60 per hour. I did a playboy model for $50.00 an hour with her clothes on:) At least she said she did Playboy *LOL*

It's all a negotiation. If you have good work and original ideas you can get a model to reduce their rates or even do TF.

If you are new to the biz and are wanting to work with your first nude models you should expect to pay in the range of $100 for a good model. But remember, everything is negotiable. This model sounds like she was trying to take advantage.

I agree with the above. Offer her a fair round figure. If she doesn't take it tell her there are no hard feelings and move on. If she tries to play you again, move on!!!!

I have been fortunate to never have to pay for a nude, implied or glamour. You should also try www.modelbrigade.com. I get a lot more models off it

I'm guessing this shoot would have been for your portfolio right? If so, does the photographer also send the paid models the pictures? If so, what resolution should the pictures be?

That is negotiated in advance with the model and varies depending on what the model needs/desires and how much she's willing to accept in lieu of payment.

I think this relationship works much better when both the model and the photographer are working toward a common goal. Most models want some really good tasful nudes for their portfolio. Sell your abilities and if they are serious about their career they will probably do it for nothing. Develop a good reputation and the may start to seek you out and pay you. Remember they need a solid portfolio as much as you need a subject.

I'm no pro, but when I managed a few local bands, travel and food were usually included in the artist's rider and provided by venue. The band would get 70% of total door charge, I got 15% of their take.

In short 3 bucks a KM is probably cheaper than providing a taxi/limo for her.
Order in Asian Cuisine(Thai, Hunan, cambodian, etc most models musicians are veg heads) take a break after the first hour for dinner. Shoot the second hour offer her 125 and call it even.

Sorry but I'd tell her that she has to handle her own agent fees. Krist 25%, is she a model or a callgirl, cuz that is pimp percentage.

That might be the standard for bands, but it's certainly not for the type of modeling we're discussing here. At least not in my area and not for such a short shoot. I'll pay actually transportation costs (gas, train ticket, etc.) if I really want to work with the model and I'll treat her to lunch or dinner if we're working over that time frame, that is, I'll make the offer but usually the models decline. And I certainly don't pay agent fees.

That is basicly what I was getting at, asking the shooter to take up agent fees is absurd. Just using the music example for what management fees would most likely be.

I've only been on site for a few pro fashion shoots @ RISD. I've noticed that there is always snacks and beverages provided for the models.
