W i i i i d e! People will still try to walk in front of you. Fast helps, too. ;)
What camera? ISO 1600 can look pretty good, properly exposed.

Depends what kind of show. As wide as you can get for full car shots. Regular zoom can be used for catching specific mods or engines. I was able to use 24-105 at my last show. But I was a vendor, so I was fortunate to shoot without people getting in the way.

I'm in a similar situation, doing a show at the NEC in Birmingham, which has horrific lighting, so apart from a fast lens (i'm renting a 70-200 F2.8 IS), what recommendations are there concerning flash (onboard, offboard, diffusers, etc), sorry for hijacking the original post.

what recommendations are there concerning flash (onboard, offboard, diffusers, etc) I don't use one. A little bit of fill might separate the car from the background a bit, & some guys have luck with that, but unless it's a silver car, I wouldn't expect that you'll get much help from it. OTOH, there's no reason that you shouldn't try some shots with one & see how you like them?
Now if you also had models in the shot, some fill with a diffuser would come in handy.

I did super car show in monte carlo, and it was too much people around, I had 17-40 with me and it didn't help me at all... I would say fast wide prime would be good for that situation

ISO 400+
Wide open
I used a 5D+24-105 f4L IS and it was great. IS really did help nailing key shots at slow shutter speeds.
580EXII set to ETTL and used the bounce card to throw a bit of light forward. Angled about 75 degrees. I know it wasted a lot of light but it worked well for me.
I did keep a CPL at times to reduce reflections and some may not like using them, I love it.
Heres some pics to give you an idea.

Also, is it best to set the ISO on a 40d to "auto" mode so it will automatically pick the right setting? or just set it manually based on test shots?
Also, what is considered "wide"? Am I better off using my 10-20 or my 17-50 f2.8?

or just set it manually based on test shots? For me, manual always. For a good starting point, first set the f-stop & shutter speed you need for the effect you want. Then the other parameter: f-stop or shutter speed. Then adjust the ISO.
Need an exposure crutch? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=89123) Am I better off using my 10-20 or my 17-50 f2.8? One on the cam & one in my pocket would be my plan. Try for your own viewpoint on the show:

I shot the 17-40L f/4 at the SEMA show and i ended up taking my tripod around, but saw a huge number of 24-70L 2.8's around....

What about the Tokina 11-16/2.8?
I am also thinking about picking up this lens for the same reason. what do you guys/gals think about it for car shows and car photography in general. Or would I be better of picking up the 17-40 for auto photography?

Bump, was curious about people's thought on a wide lens like the Tokina 11-16/2.8, Cannon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 or Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L II
Right now I'm leaning more towards the 10-22mm, but I would really like to hear some other people's opinions...
Cheers,

I took mine, used it before the show opened and left it behind when the crowds started. Personally, I don't think you'll get chance to use it.
