Hi all, I have just helped a friend getting his first digicam, s45, and so far so good. Seems canon had made s30 and s40 base design even better. Some of the layout and feature improvement are as follow:

1. Exposure,AWB,AEB,Flash Power button had been changed to function button. So you just need to presh function button once, and the menu list will come out at the left hand side of LCD. There are exposure compensation, AWB, ISO (50-400), Bracketing (AEB and Focus bracketing!!!), File size, Flash power, Color effect (not on its ring controller anymore). I found that the new layout is better since I only need to press func button once and use controller to access impt functions much faster when changing flash power.

2. Flash button can only change into 3 modes now: Off, Auto, Force. Other options had been moved to menu section, including Slow synchro, red eye reduction, and curtain allocation (1st and 2nd curtain).

3. Manual Focus is much better now. I'll copy what DPreview says about s602z. Instead of just blowing the pixel out, the magnified picture of object is now finer and more accurate than its siblings.

4. Orientation sensor. Good to auto rotate your picture.

5. Pretty cheap (at least in Singapore). My friend got it at S$950, less than s40's price 5 mths ago (when I bought my s30).

6. Improved battery life (that's what said, haven't test it out)

7. Faster switching from record to play mode, or play to thumbnail mode. However I found no substantial improvement of s45's write speed compared to s30 after taking picture.

8. Multicontroller set button is flatter, thus making it harder to get it missed.

However S45 still exhibit the low light focusing problem, unlike the reported case of G3 ability to auto focus in pitch black situation. Maybe G3's AF sensor is too big? Hope this information helps you to decide sx0 or s45.
