A good lens with fair sharpness and good contrast:
These were shot at various focal lengths:

I dont have alot of shots from this lens, I have had it a few years but most of my slides were stolen a year ago. This lens is great at the wide end, I use my 50 1.4 for mid range and only the 17-40 for wide.
I am pleased with the lens at 17 and its better at about 20. I say spring for it, its a cheap lens with excelent results!

Fair sharpness? The main reason I was getting it was because thats the sharpest I found for the price

It is. . .just doesn't compare to the primes I use most of the time (not in the same focal length category).

Right: 50/1.4, 85/1.8, 100/2.0 (macro), 135/2.0L -- all very good glass but not for wide-angle photography.
If you're using the 17-40 for landscape work, you should be thinking about a tripod (if you haven't already). Because of the tremendous depth of field in properly set up WA shots, you can get lullled into thinking that your images will be sharp. But camera shake is a factor and can ruin what you thought was going to be your best shot of the day.

Someone help me. Does this lens just happen to make clouds look really cool or are people frequently using a circular polarizer. I swear that 80% of the great wide angle shots I have seen with awesome clouds in them have come from the 17-40.

Check out www.marcderidder.com (http://www.marcderidder.com). The photo on the home page shows the sharpness and detail with a tricky night shot using 30 seconds exposure.

On the clouds, it's not always the polarizers, it's "L" contrast and color...can't be beat.

HAHA. 8 months later.
I think the confusion for me was that I have been living in Korea for so long. The pollution in the air and the general visibility problems make clouds very uninteresting. I went back to the US for 2 weeks in May this year and found this out. The clouds were amazing to me. On that very rare day here in Korea when the clouds are beautiful, my students stare out the window like there was a dragon flying around.
No polarizer or L lens can get me pretty clouds like I am used to, only a $1000 plane ticket.
