This moss (Hylocomium splendens) was found growing on a large bolder along a stream in a mountain pass. It look like a small fern. The leaves are flat in appearance and grow in the same plane. A new branch grows, each year, in the middle of the top branch, arching up in a stair-step fashion. These photographs were taken on February 2, 2005, in Zerby Gap, Penn Township, Centre County, PA
