I know... I know...

Canon will have to come up with something to counter this lens.

I will buy it, even with some chromatic aberrations for 400-500 bucks probably.

So excited. Oh dammit... I forgot... I'm full of sugar :lol::lol::lol::lol:

HUH?? Is this an EF-S equivalent ?? I somehow missed that on the spec sheets..............though you could be right.

.............I wonder if this will now work with my 10D:mad:

I'm pretty sure you will be ok with the 10D. From what I've read, the DC lenses are EF mount, but if you try and use them on a full frame you will get severe vignetting. I assume the 1.3x sensors will also have quite a bit of vignetting, but might be somewhat usable with these DC lenses.

Canon doesn't have to eat it's heart out... I'm pretty sure the 35 1.4 will be the better of the two. Although it's a logical introduction in the 1.6x / 1.5x space.

Sigma's "DC" lenses will fit any EF mount,. but they will only work with 1.6X or 1.5X sensors.

We don't know for sure. 35 L has some chromatic aberrations wide open I beleive.

1100 hundred bucks
72 mm filter

I don't think sigma is gonna be nearly that expensive... and taking into account that it's easier to build for small sensors, we may not be able to see any difference in quality.

Another "95% of quality, fraction of the price" from sigma... like 70-200

And 8 blade diaphragm... drooool :(

Even disregarding the fact it won't fit my camera...

I think you suffer from premature exclamation. :) !!! ;)
Let's wait and see some sample images before getting too excited.

Yup, that's what's on my B&H wishlist. Trouble is, they don't have any in stock. :( Someone posted an awesome picture using the 35 f/1.4 in the FM forum and now the whole world wants one of those.

About the "APS-C size digital camera lenses". I think it is not a very good idea to buy them. As soon as you change cameras to 1D series (or something else) you are not able to use your digital lenses. And I'm not expecting Sigma 30/1.4 to perform very well @ 1.4 based on my Sigma experience: Sigma 20/1.8 is not sharp with 1.8 and Sigma 14/2.8 is not sharp at all with 2.8. That is why Canon L's are worth the money: they have very usable open aperture.

And what is DG?

Dpreview:
DG lenses provide full compatibility with film and digital SLR's but have been 'optimized' (there's no detail on exactly what this means) for use with digital SLR's.

According to Sigma FAQ what "DG" means is less vignetting and wider lenses for 1.5X use. See http://www.sigmaphoto.com/faq/faq.asp?navigator=3 . What does this mean? They brand "DG" as some new innovation but to me sounds more like a marketing excuse for making lenses for reduced FoV, which means smaller glass which means better profit. Their 1.5X plan is a worrying design trend and I've seen its effect: About 14/2.8 they say "It is especially desirable for use with digital SLR cameras." which is true because with full frame SLR the lens sucks but with 1.3 it is barely usable and with 1.6X it is ok.

I believe you are confusing their "DG" lenses with their "DC" lenses. DC are the ones for cameras with APS-sized sensors. DG are the old full-size lenses with a new badge, and maybe some extra coatings on the glass.

No, see their FAQ items

"Does Sigma make lenses for digital cameras."
"Some Sigma lenses are designated "DG". What does this mean?"

in http://www.sigmaphoto.com/faq/faq.asp?navigator=3 .
They talk ONLY about vignetting and focal multiplier needs.

Anyway, if any new Sigma lenses have the same compatibility problems they used to have, it will be a no-go area. Unless you don't plan to buy a new(er) Canon camera. Ever.

I stopped using Sigma for this reason. BTW, I agree on de aps-format issue: future digital SLR camera's will feature larger sensors (we all want that 1Ds mk II someday in life...)

On the issue of the Canon 35/1.4 I can tell you it is a stunning lens! Superb glass.

LOL! That FAQ is very poorly written.

But at least they do say "Sigma presently offers a number of lenses designed specifically for digital SLR cameras, which can also be used with 35mm SLRs... These lenses are designated DG type"

It was your comment about "smaller glass" that made me think you were talking about the DC lenses. The DG series is indeed full-size, and there is no less glass then there was before the DG badging.

The DC lenses, on the other hand, are indeed smaller and designed exclusively for digital SLRs with APS-sized sensors.

Sounds like they need a FAQ about their FAQ. ;)

I believe one of the things added both to DC and DG lenses, and part of what makes them "digital", is an anti-reflex coating on the rear element of the lens. This supposedly decreases reflexes from the sensor.

Oh I dunno, if it will fit any EF mount it will work on any camera. It just depends how much 'vignetting' you are happy with. :D
