View Full Version : Is this normal?

Hi!

I'm just now getting into concert photography and was wondering if this exchange was normal. I contacted the venue, asking for a photo pass because I couldn't find the band's PR handler. I contacted them at least two weeks before the show, and the day of the show they send me this:

"You are approved to shoot GWAR tonight under the following conditions:

Please have the photogs get me sample of their shots for possible future use.

We approve this under the condition we get to use one shot from each if we chose to"

Normal?

I don't really understand what this guy is saying.

I didn't shoot the show, not because of this, but because of the incredibly short notice, I had no means of immediate transportation, if he contacted me earlier I could have arranged it...

Anyway, for future shooting at this venue will I still have to abide by this, even if I get the pass through the band? Or is this all normal? If so, that's cool too, I just don't really understand all this.

Thanks

I wouldn't agree with those terms. Essentially they are demanding you give them a license to use your images for whatever they want, for free...

I think they are only asking for "rights" to one image, but that's still too much without restriction. If it was like a myspace only thing, I would agree if you are just getting in trying to get experience.

Thanks guys.

I'm going to try to set up with the bands rather than the venue. If that doesn't work or if the venue gives the bands' PR guys trouble I'll just clarify and see what exactly he means I guess.

Sounds like the venue just contacted the promoter and that's what the band said. Probably SOL unless you agree.

Sounds like the manager has their head up......uh.....on top of their neck...

Mind telling us what band it is? EDIT: ...didnt realize gwar wsa the band name

i wouldn't bring my camera to a gwar show. i'm sure the pictures would be just insane, but there's no telling what fluids would end up on/in the camera and lenses.

well yeah I was planning on hanging back and using a 70-200 or something if I ended up going to this.

I'm shooting State Radio on Thursday though!

the gwar show has come and gone, I don't listen to them and there are plenty more acts coming around, so I'm not too worried about it.

Good. Glad to see that you are willing to step away from a show because of the terms. Furthermore, I would like to see you write them saying that their terms are unacceptable, and you are no longer interested in shooting it.

That's odd, I've shot GWAR 5 times and they have never had any kind of rules other than the standard 3 and out.

Sounds like more of a rights grab by the venue than by the band.

It's pretty easy to get a hold of the tour manager or PR person for a band. Best thing you could do would be to skip the venue and go directly to the band to get access.

Oh, it was definitely the venue.
