View Full Version : P.O.T.N. OP Tech Camera Strap
IanD

OK folks, I think i have most of this figured out.
Here is the breakdown as far a actual cost goes-
OP Tech Pro Loop camera strap (black) $10.70
Silk Screen Charge $ 1.50
FOB Factory Shipping $ 0.75
Mailing Envelope $ 1.00
TOTAL $13.95 (USD)
Now there are two different models of the Pro Strap. The one that works the best in experience is the Pro Loop model. There is nothing that can touch the camera body and scratch it. The web strap model does have plastic connectors. The Pro Loop has no problem supporting a MKII plus any lens up to a 500 prime. We have tried it, so camera weight is not an issue here. As far as color goes, the strap is available in many colors but to keep this real simple, I would suggest black as it goes with just about everything.
However, if folks want another color, it is no problem, just keep in mind that we will be ordering only 1 color.
Silk screening is one color only so we have to keep the graphics to that.
Payment can be handled by PayPal thanks to one of our members who is willing to handle that end. Credit cards can also be handled on this account so there are two payment options. We also have to include 3% that PP will charge. What we have to figure out now is the shipping charges to forum members. Phil has done so prelim work and postal charges range are roughly the following.
USA- $1.98
Canada- $2.35
Europe/UK- $6.40
The Land of OZ- $7.10
Now if my math and logic is functioning to any great degree that would make the strap cost $16.40 to a member in the US. Very reasonable considering that a non-custom strap is $19.95 from B&H.
What I would like to know now is the following-
1) Are we all in agreeance of adding $2.00 to the price of the strap to be forwarded to Pekka to help with server costs?
2) The color of the strap itself, black or? ? ?
3) How many straps would you like? This is NOT a comittment but we would like an idea just to be sure we will make the minimum order quantity.
I'll let this run for a week and during that time we can have another post for logos to be submitted to and we can all choose the best one.
Please realize that this is a one shot order and we really do not want to have a bunch of straps laying around someones home. The way the ordering will work, if this meets approval, we will post a sticky for 2 weeks where folks will order their straps. Payment will be requested at the same time. At the end of the order period, the straps will be ordered from OP Tech (who have been very kind and helpful in working with us) and delivered to our "Shipper" who will in turn mail them out to folks. turn around for the straps is approx 2 weeks. Please also note that OP Tech does not give open terms and requires that the straps be paid for in advance of production. That is the reason we will be asking for payment when you order yours.

I like the Pro Loop style. The center of each is the same, so if you have the web version and you like it you can clip the POTN strap onto the web buckles.
It sounds like $18.40 shipped within the USA (with $2 for Pekka), correct?
I, too, would go higher for a kickback to Pekka. Perhaps we could make this optional. I would personally agree to $20 shipped with any difference going to Pekka.
I want 2 in black.

I am going with;
I feel $20 total is good for all from the looks of it, with net profit going to server. It gives a sort of discount to our non-US friends who otherwise seem to have to pay more for their camera equipment then we do. On the other hand I don't know what percentage are non-US/Canada, so maybe have to tack on a 2 or 3 dollars for shipping there to balance out. Although $20 plus shipping would not be too bad either. Then again you all know which camera I got.
Black color
and I am likely to order two if at or under $20 total each and I like the logo.

Has an embroidered logo been considered like the one on the EOS straps? Last a lot longer than a silk screen logo. A shop down the road has a computerised embroider, I have had custom stuff done before, really easy to do shirts and caps, not sure about camera straps though.

Pter,
OP Tech is not equipped to embroider and the finished strap will not lend itself to being run on an embroider.

I would gladly take two in black, but if there is enough interest to order a large quantity of two colors of straps, I would like one black and one gray. It helps identify the camera in the bag so I can grab it by the strap.

My thought is that a different screen color for the other color straps would involve a second setup charge, while screening two different color straps with the same color screen would not matter - but Ian would have to verify that.
I can be somewhat flexible on the second color for the strap - I just like to be able to tell which camera I am grabbing from the bag if I am in a hurry.

You can't keep rising the costs. Not right away. Maybe down the road. I'm not rich and right now, unemployed.

Maybe we need to price them at cost + shipping + minimum $2 server donation.
Then members can donate $2, $5, $10 or whatever they want. Just make sure
when sending the money via PayPal that you leave a note stating what you are
leaving for a donation.

But I am also sure that some don't care and just want the forum for free.... This discusion should probably move to the thread for donating (the thread You reffered to) instead of this thread.

This is just the prelimary order thread to get an idea of how many straps we will need, which will determine the final price. The more we order the bigger discount Op-Tech will give us. The only thing holding us up now is that we are waiting for word from Canon as to whether or not we can use their logo. If we don't hear from Canon by sometime next week, we will have to decide on a non-Canon POTN logo, and then send out the final ordering instructions.
Stay tuned, we are getting close.....

The most recent logo thread is here, and this will also be voted on with a poll after we hear back from Canon:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2601&stc=1
Conk developed the basic logo, and I think the three ideas we have are all variations on his initial design. We have to decide on red lettering or white lettering, because Op-Tech can only silkscreen in one color.
With Canon approval, it will most likely be this (In red or white)
http://www.casciola.com/pics/potn.jpg
And without Canon approval, I think something like these two (In red or white):

http://www.casciola.com/pics/potn3.gif
We will have a poll sometime next week to determine the logo and color, and of course Pekka will have to give it the final approval.

Perhaps the word "Canon" can still be on there even if it's not in their logo form.

I believe Op-Tech said no to that as well (Canon word only), but I'm not 100% sure. Ian has been doing all the legwork on that end, dealing with Op-Tech and stuff.

No. You're not too late. IanD is coordinating this, and we're still waiting for authorization from Canon to use their name on the straps.

Potentially dumb question, but is Canon already granting its' permission to use their logo at the top-left portion of the page?

I would also like to put my name down for a black one also. I can do an additional $10 over the cost towards the site as well.

Have I missed anything or is this still proceeding and just awaiting a response from Canon? There seems to be a dummy spit somewhere but I hope this doesn't effect the outcome.
If any assistance is required, albight from Australia, I'd be most happy to offer my help.

Paul,
Still waiting on Canon. I think we are getting close to just doing a POTN strap. I'm going to give them till early next week and then we will order.

Then we better go with the POTN url only, but in Corona font to make it have the Canon look ;)

I see Canon is being slow to OK the logo use. We'd have to go with JUST the URL. Won't that look a bit plain?

We got Canon's approval to use the name, now we are just picking the design for the silkscreen and we will start the official ordering probably over the weekend:
