I am trying to custom fabricate a homemade softbox with foam core walls and then I tried to actually cut some foam core with exacto knives. That did not go so well! Not very straight either. I tried scissors, even worse. What would be the best way to cut foam core to get straight edges? I was thinking a table saw or something like that but it may be too excessive. Does anyone have any suggestions, I would love to hear them! :)

Did you try cutting the foam core with a new Xacto Knife and a metal ruler or straight edge?

Yes, it did help a bit however not as perfect as I was imagining. When the blade starts cutting off course it's much harder to bring it back on course, even though it moves just a bit. I may have to slow things down to bit a tad bit more careful

Use the curved blade, go slow. Don't try to cut all the way through, cut half way then finish with a second pass.

Perfect. I did not know they made those. If the above technique does not work I will be getting one!

Use a VERY sharp knife, but try the curved knife and the cutter if you want a clean job. I made a life sized cardboard cutout of myself, the cutting out was the hardest part. Before you try and cut out anything important try on a small version - I made 15" cutouts of myself to practice on :)

Several shallow passes with a single edge razor blade, using the metal straight edge as a guide, each pass successively deeper.

I used a razor blade and a ruler to get straight lines. I did several passes to get through and to make sure it was smooth.

Know anyone with a bandsaw? I've cut it before on my bandsaw and it worked very well.

I use a single edged razor blade and metal straight edge and multiple slices. You can also cut it on a table saw with an 80 toothed blade. You can cut it on a band saw and you can cut it with a router and a straight bit. Be careful if you use the table saw and don't go to slowly or to fast. If you go to slow, it will melt the core and stick. That means it will throw it in your face.
