View Full Version : One in a Million Shot

Last night, a strange thing happened.... twice in 10 minutes. I was shooting a show, and in 2 shots got the flash from some other person's P&S in my shot....

I don't know if this has happened to anyone else, but I have to think this is pretty rare. I mean, think about it, of all the time in the world, your shutter being open is at the exact same moment at someone else's flash going off.....

Now, if I thought it was weird and cool once, I thought it totally awesome the second time.... but then the third time... which was just a few minutes after the second... now this is utterly bizarre

Oh, and it only happens to me at Will Dailey shows.... maybe its the vast number of college girls with P&S's that go to his shows.....

Now, some of you may think these have flash from me, but I don't shoot with flash on my DSLR at shows... ever. (plus the EXIF will say flash did not fire)

Oh, and I did adjust the white balance in Camera Raw so they were at least viewable....

That's some freaky timing. Actually works pretty well on the first shot!

I saw one shot from a wedding (a family member, not the fishtog) where the bride and groom were stood still posing the cake cut or something and there were so many flashes going off at them that this guy just stood back and took a longish exposure using everyone else's flashes for light. The final image looked pretty cool =)

it happens to me from time to time. never three times in one show, though.

I agree it looks nice in the first shot.
I've had it happen before as well.

I think it happens to everyone but it's pretty rare ... must coincide with the financials meltdown for freaky occurrences! :-)

It's pretty rare in general shooting, but if light is horrible and I want to get a shot of whats happening, I'll fire bursts while people are pressing their shutters to get some light.

That said it's hard to get the flash of their's looking its best, given that it can easily blow out parts of your shot if you're exposing for stage lights.

Sometimes it can work out okay:

I've had it happen once. 'Tis, indeed, rare I think...

It is rare but it does happen. During the civil war there were lots of instances where one side's bullet was hit in mid flight by the other side's. There are lots of proof of this in collectors cabinets.

I think with major acts in arenas it happens more often than you would imagine. I must have at least 50 images from the recent Springsteen tour that have flash in them. The plus for me is that I was at the soundboard and they were small flashes into excellent lighting. Maybe I need to hire a few people up close with hand-held wireless flash units and I can have the trigger!

Might be worth exploring. :D

I've always wanted to put a flash on a wireless trigger on the floor behind the drummer pointed up towards his head. If it was nice and smoky, it'd give a pretty cool effect from the crowd....

Happens to me pretty often, but the rare part is when the unintentional off-camera light source actually works well with my exposure. I have plenty of photos that have been blown out white by someone else's flash.

999 times out of 1000 YES! But, there might be that 1 time where if you are creative enough, it works out for you....

I didn't know you were in 'The Land of Redheads'! I love redheads. And Karen does nice wedding work, too. :-)

I've only shot one indoor show (Rooney), but I thought it was really cool when I saw it after the download. It happened three times for me too, but only one came out well enough to keep.

Flash for rock shows are kind of rare and could be good, but usually are pretty bad due to using Av. For me, though, in the club scene, flashes are pretty common and benefit a whole lot. It's actually pretty common to get some flash shots, and they usually come out pretty well.

Not 1 in a million but the 1st shot is great!
