...well a few weeks ago, I was asked to take a shot of a personality (kiwi's should recognise her) for publicity purposes. I shot with my 50 @ f/5.6 ISO 200 in a white tent (for even lighting, best we could do on the site).

I choose to shot RAW, as I was unsure of white balance and suspected the camera would under expose due to the larger white areas. I didn't have a grey card to check with.

Anyway, here is a part of the image @ 100%:
First the cameras JPG

Second a tuned TIF (then converted to JPG for this forum) from Photoshop’s RAW importer,

At first the RAW seemed washed out to me, but that is exactly how it was wanted, natural colourings, the graphic artist was going to clear cut the images, and fine tune.
Would have been hard pressed to get the JPG looking half decent!

I'm hooked, a little more practice though...

suspected the camera would under expose due to the larger white areas. Not really, cause it's a flat white. A large SPECULAR highlight, like a reflection from the sun, would do it. See:

The full size image has a lot more white in it than the 100% crop I have posted. I have had issues with subjects being overexposed when shooting on a black background before.

BTW that link is a very interesting read!

so you're saying that the second pic is the correctly exposed one, with the raw conversion?

man i just read thru a discussion on jpg vs raw on dpreview...and my head hurts!

In the end the no exposure compensation was used with the conversion, it was 'just in case'
