View Full Version : Editing AVI Clips?

I've been incorporating AVI film clips (taken with a Canon S30) into a slide show for viewing on a monitor screen. Can anyone recommend software for simple editing of the AVI clips (eliminating unwanted sound on some of the clips, and cutting frames from the beginning or end of clips)?

As for editing the audio, it depends on what you want to do. If you want to do quite a bit of editing, you'll probably have to extract the audio and edit it using some audio program.

Thank you for suggesting the great site. I was able to do everything that I had asked for, plus modifying brightness and contrast, rotating the clips, sharpening, etc. but I cannot increase the image size as seen on the monitor screen within my "MediaShow" slide show. (The AVI clips come out tiny.) I have tried the "Virtualdub" resize filter, but I can't understand how to use it. Any suggestions?

Video>Filters>Resize
Input the new size (most codecs require that the sizes be a multiple of 2 for compression i.e. 2x320=640 pixels)
Choose the method for resizing (bilinear or bicubic is fine)
Then encode as usual.
Filters are order specific, so you'll probably want to apply any additional filters after the resize.

Thank you for the information on enlarging the AVI clips. However, there are multiple variations on how one can do this in VirtualDub. In all cases, I doubled the new dimensions to 640X480 in the "New Width and New Height" dialogue box, and I used the bicubic mode. 1) This approach works only when I also right click to choose 2X size. 2) When, in addition, I check the "Expand Frame and Letterbox Image" box, the new height and width is automatically entered in the lower field. In this case, I can double the image size with or without right clicking for a 2X image. I don't understand the logic behind any of this, so the simple question is whether these are all equal, or whether one of the approaches will give better resolution.

I understand your note that the filters are order specific. For instance, an appropriate brightness for the standard image is no longer appropriate for the 2X image. So the resizing needs to be done first. Question is whether the resize dubbing must be first completed before I try the other filters, or whether I can put them in numerical order on the filter list, so that the first one gets done first?.

Thanks again for your patient and helpful responses.

Hmm...I don't know how to respond since I have no clue what you are doing. I think that you are applying the resize filter, adjusting the size, adding a frame around the video (that's what the letterbox option does).

But as for the 2x, I have no idea what you are doing. If you are right clicking on the video and choosing 2x, then all you are doing is zooming in and not resizing the video.

I don't know why you would use the expand frame and letterbox option since that is usually used when a video is very wide and you want to add black space above and below the clip.

Tell me exactly what you are doing and I'll try to help the best I can. The left frame is the input stream, and the right is the output stream. You should see the results of any filters in the right frame.

Thank you but I think that I now understand. I had not been aware that the right click function was merely a zoom function for the monitor image and had no effect on resizing the final dubbed image. I also was not aware of what the lower dialogue (letterbox function) did. I had wrongly assumed that it was also involved in increasing the final dubbed image size. I now can do what I want to do, and I thank you again for your help. Vdub is really a useful and powerful program. I wish that someone would write a manual to lead beginners through it. (I don't want to "volunteer" you but you have the ability to write simply and clearly.)

Today, I would like to introduce 2 methods for editing AVI video files on Mac OS (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoedit/avi-editor-for-mac.html).
