Please help!
EOS capture works fine with my new Canon 1DS connected via the supplied firewire cable plugged into my Mac G5. In my studio setup I need to make a long firewire run (about 40 feet) between the camera and computer. I've tried using 14.5ft. firewire active extension cables from a company called Sewell. They don't work. The EOS program just gives the message camera not recognized.
Does anyone know what kind of device I need to boost the firewire signal? Great forum and a great camera!

The maximum length for a firewire cable is 14.5 feet.. But, you can purchase 14.5 foot 'active' cables (which 'boost' signal and compensate for inductance and capacitance losses)... By chaining three of these together should be able get your desired 40 feet...
Here's one site that sells them.. Shop around, you'll probably find a lower price.

He's already using active cables. Try shoving some powered hubs in to make the connections.

Out of curiosity;
If you use just one of the 14.5' cables at a time; does it work? Or do you get the same error?
If you can get it to work; can you use 1 14.5' cable plus the non powered one; does that work?
I work in a support environment; the first thing is making sure EACH of the pieces work individually before slamming them all together.
My .02 worth.

Canon has just released the WFT-!EA. Should be in the stores in a week of so.

if you are 40' from a laptop.. what do you need to be teathered for?
could you explain your shooting setup/ situation - there may be a better answer then a 40' cable

First guess would be so the complaints^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h clients can see the pics on the screen in semi-real-time. When the wireless actulaly ships, that may do the trick, but for now . . .

powered hubs will definately work as 14.5 is max length with out a power boost.

I'm downloading files to an assistant to begin the fine tuning retouching process.

Thanks for the suggestion on the powered hubs - I'll give that a try. You're right on about the clients seeing the images in semi-real time. I'm also sending the files to a second assistant.
