I'm just a hobbyist photographer but i've done paid shoot like birthdays and family functions. I was asked this weekend to do a church wedding and reception. It would be a big leap for me and I need your opinion on what gear I would need, currently shooting with my 40D - 24-70 2.8L and 50mm 1.4, 2 Flashes 580 and 430, although I have access to 2 more bodies and couple lens, 5D and Xti plus 16-35mm 2.8 II and 24-105mm IS. I'm thinking of renting a 70-200mm for some candid shots. what do you guys suggest ? Thank you

Your 24-70 2.8 on 1 body and a 70-200 2.8L IS on another body would work well as your main lens combo but also have handy a wide angle lens - 16-35 on the 5D is perfect and the 50 1.4 will also be most useful for low light stuff. Not much more you will need except for lots of memory - at least 12 gig spread across half a dozen cards and extra batteries.

Gear recommendations on the wedding faq (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=255604).

I'd put the 24-105 on the 5D, probably wouldn't bother renting the 70-200 in your position, just stand closer with the 24-105 on the 40D.

f/4 is a little slow if anything isn't in daytime. f/2.8 is better, and longer and wider apertures are better for good candids IMO.
