Hello,

As I have started to get into SLRs, my girlfriend has also sparked an interest in cameras. :) She said that she would like one for Christmas. I asked her if she wanted just a full auto camera or something she can change settings (AV, TV, M); she would like some creativity in her shots. The camera will be used for a wide generalize use, such as family gatherings, nighttime (club) shots, nature, portraits, etc.

Currently, we are looking at the A590IS and the SD1100. She liked the feel of the A590 (the ergonomics of the handle), however also likes the color (pink) of the SD1100.

I'm concered that the A590 uses regular batteries, would rather see either a battery pack or simply plug the camera into a charger. Also the A590 seems to not take multiple quick shots. The SD1100, on the other hand, seems to have a weak flash and suffer from ISO problems

The budget: $150-$175. Are there other cameras that would fit what she wants? (brand does not matter) Help me spend my money!!!

Forgot to add: Right now we are leaning towards the A590IS. From dpreview.com, it seems to be "Highly Recommended".

The A590 takes AA cells; NiMH (especially the new Eneloop) rechargeables are quite economical, plus you can get AA cells almost anywhere if yours run flat; not something you can do with the Li ion batteries of the SD series.

Hello Jon, so do you think the a590 is a better choice than the sd1100?

The battery issue alone will not cause a purchase/non-puchase.

I have the sd1100is and I love it. It is my point and shoot for when I don't want to be a photographer. Here are some images I took with it. It was a nice location on the way to get my driver's license and I didn't have my big camera. I have the pink one and I love it!

I also have a SD1100IS and couldn't be happier with it. Easily the best camera that I have owned. I am just an ordinary , every day camera user.

Hello Jon, so do you think the a590 is a better choice than the sd1100?

The battery issue alone will not cause a purchase/non-puchase.It'll do everything the SD1100 will, plus you can better control it if you want with Tv, Av and Manual modes.

Has anybody else dealt with both of these cameras?

I just bought a A590 IS and love it!!!!!!! It has all the options you are looking for. Right now they are on sale for $130-$160. The drive mode lets you take alot of quick shots. I have owned 4 Canons and this is the best so far.

I have an SD1000 that is like new that you can have for $170. I'd like to help. It is a nice little camera that got my wife to where she is now. Biggest thing it's quick flexible and she actually took it allong.

I have the sd1100 and it's an awesome camera. No joke--just by showing the video and pictures it takes ONCE, 3 more people were convinced and bought it!! Never used the a590, but used other a-series cameras, and I'm more pleased with the sd series mainly due to the size of them. IQ and other features about the same.
