Suggestion: don't buy an unstable mini-tripod. Use a reversible regular tripod. Much steadier, much more versatile!

Suggestion 2: don't buy a cheap tripod you'll only regret it I did. Save a bit more and buy something decent.

I bought a mini tripod for like 60 bucks at a photography event last year at the Toronto Convention centre. Mostly composed of steel with some titanium parts. Very sturdy, and it takes much more beating then my regular tripods. Heavier compared to other tripods of similar size but its the most versatile tripod ive ever owned

Most mini tripods aren't worth a damn for field work.

To take the question a step further, what tripod do you folks recommend for macro work?
Are those booms that attach to the head worthwhile? My current tripod is reversable, but using the camera upside down is a little problematic, at least for me.. Thanks for any input...

Stick it on auto and use a shutter release cable ;)
(btw what's the correct name for that cable?)

90% of the time I would agree. I normally use a full size Manfrotto and large ballhead but If I'm doing a hill walk there is no way I'm lugging those up. I'm not getting any younger.
So.... I bought this......http://www.cameramarts.co.uk/index.php?rm=product&id=885&category_id=24
It's small, lightish (1kg), fits IN the bag (AW is lost on my Lowepro bag with a full size tripod attached).
It can get really low and extends to about 120 cm.
I wouldn't use my 100-400 on it but the 17-40 sits well and is reasonably stable.
If size and weight is not a problem don't even consider it, use a full size tripod.
If it is a problem then this is worth looking at.

What about this one?

Sure looks sturdy to me.
Don't know what lens you use for Macro work, but if you don't use the 70-200/2.8  , then the 2 kg weight limit could be sufficient.
Best regards,
Andy
