Random pictures from Willow Springs

Took the new camera (50D) to Willow Springs. Love driving up there when there are a bunch of event all going on. Just a few pictures form the day. Any comments welcomed, I know my angles aren't that exciting. I am still working on the panning and getting decent images.

there was also action at the gokart track and the 2 ovals, but I didn't get to them. Oh and some group was doing drift practice on a big plain paved section. heh.

So how do you like the camera.


Going from the 30D to the 50D I do have to say I like it. There are some things I just have to get used to but nothing big. Just things that are different from the 30D.

The images come out great as long as I haven't screwed up the exposure (i shoot manual and I kept opening the aperture up by accident because of how my 30D would act vs this, my fault for not going over the way all the buttons were set more thoroughly first)

I can't wait to go do some night/skyline shots with it, but that doesn't have much to do with anything here!

oh, and like everyone has said, the screen is real nice, hard to keep yourself from looking at it. Which, is kinda why i kept changing the aperture! Oh well. Lesson learned, wasn't there for money was there for learning so that's ok. :oops:

Let me ask you a few questions:
- Why the tight crops? Is there a reason?
- Why the odd sizing of the photos?
- Why are the subjects so high in the frame?

I know that you're shooting for yourself, but limiting your images to certain types of shots can limit your ability to make the shots stand out. I don't want to comment too much on the motorcycle shots, because I don't have an eye for motorcycle shots. But while I think your exposure and pans are pretty solid for the 2 automotive shots, there's very limited use for these 2 shots. These are great shots to sell to a driver, because they emphasize the driver and the car. But in an editorial or commercial context, these shots can easily get lost. They're you're 'standard' middle-of-the-frame pans. Clean, in-focus shots.

I know this was your first time out with the camera, and there's definitely a certain amount of learning to be done with a new camera (lord knows it took me 3-4 events to get comfortable with my 1d mkII). But framing isn't camera specific. ;)

You've got the basics down well. Now it's time to become a photographer :)

I was just trying to get the panning down. I have gone back to using my monopod. I guess my main goal for the day was JUST the cars/ bikes.

Just cropped them all 16:9, that was purely trying something different I liked after seeing someone else do it.

I really don't know! (which I know is bad) I think looking at them I was just trying to not fill the frame with dirt in the background.

I should probably go through the images and see what I have. The only kinda "different shot i had was this.

Nice shots. Its a shame #2 has the head so close to the photo edge.
