great shot. I don't know if we have red ones in the states. Well, not in New Jersey, anyway.

Lovely shot.

These are meant to be local to me (Hampshire) but I have never seen one. Was it a woodland pond you found this one in?

Thanks Brian I agree about the background its harder to get an out of focus background with dragonflies they often perch on bushes and darters like perching on the ground

Lovely shot.

Thanks Lester it was in a pond next to a small wood. I hope you manage to find them. Have you got the watching british Dragonflies book its really good and has lots of sites

Watching British Dragonflies by Steve Dudley Caroline Dudley and Andrew mackay Its published by Subbuteo natural history books hope that helps :D
They were also writing a book on butterflies with the same format but it was cancelled which is a shame

Thanks!

I have a link on my web site but my web hoster's down (still!).

But here is an Amazon link http://www.amazon.co.uk/Field-Dragonflies-Damselflies-Britain-Ireland/dp/0953139905/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1223568203&sr=1-2.

It is compact but has very good illustrations showing male and female and often female colour variations in plan and male in elevation, distribution maps and lots of useful ecology and field characteristics.
