Im going to have just over $300 to spend soon, I am thinking of getting a 420EX flash and a 50mm 1.8 lens w/ filter. Can I use the flash as a slave without any adaptors? And in march I am going to be getting the 28-135 IS USM. Do you guys like that lens? Thanks for any help!

The 420 will require something to trigger it. Either a 550/580/st-e2 setup will do it. Of if you care to use it in manual you could use a optical shoe mount slave and have the on board flash trigger it. Did you want wireless off camera capability? If you want something near camera, you can use the off camera shoe cord 2.

Hi merrrrjig.
The Canon EF 28-135 IS lens is very good, in fact it's one of the better non-L zoom lenses available. The IS and a very useable zoom range make this lens a very versatile walkaround solution. The optical quality is fine as long as you don't use it wide-open.
Another lens to consider in this range is the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. It's about the same price as the Canon 28-135, but is smaller, lighter and most important - brighter with its constant f/2.8 aperture across the zoom range. Brighter lens will allow you to see brighter picture in viewfinder and will deliver more light for manual and auto-focus. And, of course, you'll be able to shoot at higher shutter speeds than with a slow lens.
