View Full Version : I think it's dead.....

I had been having small sensor issues previously, but when I got my S1IS out today to document the wonderful split forehead my son now sports, I now have huge issues. I tried different memory cards and resetting the camera, to no avail. Here is a sample I took just a few minutes ago:

I guess the saving grace is that I am finishing up trying to buy a 40D off of here, and hopefully will get it next week. What is frustrating is that my S1IS camera only has about 8600 clicks on it. I was hoping to continue using it until I was able to get a lens for the 40D body. I think I'm going to spring for a nifty fifty to tide me over....

In any case, my question, of which I pretty much know the answer, is: Can I salvage my S1IS, short of sending it back to Canon?

Your camera is eligible for free repair service, regardless of warranty status. This thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=238911) provides details on the issue.

Hmmm, I wasn't aware that the S1 IS could have problems. I really haven't exposed it to drastic temperatures or humidity. I take it outside a bunch, but only in the morning or evening, and not while it is raining. I think I may have to give Canon a call! Thanks a bunch!

I just contacted Canon, and yes, it is the problem you mentioned. They will repair it for free, thank goodness. I'm glad, as we were planning on continuing to use it as a knock-around camera and also as a digital movie recorder.

Ah, I love a happy ending! ;)
Glad I could help.

That's a bummer, to be sure. :(

Me, I just wish I had one of the affected cameras lying around, so I could send it in for free repairs and then convert it to IR-only use.

If you're lucky they'll send you a new S5IS. :)

...which is exactly why I'd like to have one of the affected S* models.
I've heard of such replacements being made before, but I have yet to find such a camera being offered for sale. If I could find one, and if it were to be replaced with an S3 or S5, I'd take the IR hot-mirror out of it in a heartbeat. :)

My S1 of 3 or 4 years died with this problem on 9/27. Canon emailed me the shipping label on 9/29 and it was out the door to them on 9/30. They received it on 10/2 and sent it out their door on 10/7. I'll find out tomorrow, 10/9, what Canon did for a repair.

No transformation into an S5 here. Received the same S1 camera back. Optical assembly was replaced along with other electrical adjustments, inspection and cleaning.

Thanks for the update, DigitalDisaster. Funny that happened to you about the same time. I asked how long I could expect my S1IS to last, and the guy said it is rated to 100,000 activations. I've got about 8600, so looks like I'll have it for quite a while yet, barring any other difficulties.

I found this while net-surfing one day. Evidently the stuck shutter is not uncommon. It might be worth a try.

that link actually does work...i found it a while back thru this forum....but the camera's never really been the same since...it's been a while since i've really used it, but i took it out the other day, and i couldn't get it to focus on anything...and then the few pictures that i did take had these crazy horizontal lines throughout...and also there's some major vignetting from the shutter not fully opening/closing...at first it was way worse, and has gotten slightly better...but still really obvious

i think i'm going to have to trade it in thru canon's loyalty program...i'm just hoping they offer up the sx10IS, or s5IS

either way i use my 40D more anyways...but i did love my s2...

For what it's worth, Canon just repaired my five-year-old A60 pocket camera for free. It had the same problem, lines in the lcd and in the printed image. They replaced the ccd and even paid all the shipping...took about a week. The S2 IS (I love mine too) isn't specifically mentioned in this service notice but it couldn't hurt to talk to them. Good luck, Daniel

Well, I just got it back, and it works great!! No charge whatsoever, and Canon said it has been cleaned. Have yet to see if it still has a lot of hot pixels.

Hey, cool! I wouldn't expect hot pixels; I believe they replace the circuit assembly that contains the sensor.
